I use Elements 6. All my jpg files open from the editor in camera raw. I would prefer to have them open in camera raw only when I ask for them to do that. Is there a way to turn off camera raw from being the default open for jpg files? I searched the forums but could not find this question answered. Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

It is my experience that camera raw only opens raw files, not jpegs....
That is a new one for me. Hopefully somebody will be along with more helpful suggestions but just to be sure, if you open your photo folder and right click properties-does it show jpg or raw?

JPEGs should only open up in Camera Raw when Open As >Camera Raw is specified. They will, however, automatically open in Camera Raw if they had been previously opened and adjusted that way.

In that case, I guess, you would have to specify Open As >JPEG to override.

What platform (Mac?) and are you opening them from Bridge?

Juergen, you had the answer to my problem. The JPG images had, in fact, been opened in CS3 with Camera Raw, and subsequently closed without saving edits. Then, I was opening them in Elements 6 and that is when they again opened in Camera Raw. The "cure" was to open the image in Elements Camera Raw, immediated Save AS jpg, close out. And thereafter, when opening in Elements 6, they came in as plain jpg files--no more Camera Raw.

Jeff, the comment above tells how I was opening them. I'm using PC and not using Bridge but rather Organizer.

I perhaps should mention that I have CS3 and Elements 6. I use CS3 for my work, but I am preparing materials for an Elements Workshop I am going to teach in a few weeks. I was using CS3 to "test" out some of the techniques I wanted to demonstrate in Elements (being aware of the program differences, of course).

Thanks for the help and suggestions.

Restroud, glad you found the answer.

I personally use CS4 and Elements (and LR2) and shoot in both RAW and JPG. I have CS4 configured to open Because Bridge CS4 is also now more robust, I can even go to ACR from Bridge, and even make ACR preset adjsutments in Bridge, without ever leaving Bridge. I foind myself using Elements less and less, but still like to return to it for some functions.

If your jpg opens in camera raw, it may be 16-bit. Try this:
Open Image from Camera Raw
Image > Mode > 8bits/Channel
Save JPG

Next time it should open without Camera Raw.
