Greetings,

Is this the area for posting questions/problems about PSE7?

If so, I'm taking Matt's layers class which I did a long time ago in PSE 4. (yah..it's been a long hiatus)

Anyhoo......the problem is this:

When I place a layer behind a photo in PSE 7, it's still showing the layer on top of the photo. This was a custom shape per the tape. So I'm wondering if the downloaded image created ages ago is causing the problem.

Ah..an idea stoopie Joe. Go create a photo in PSE 7, create a layer behind...Okay. I'll go do that.

NOPE>> The custom shape still shows on top of the photo even when I move the layer behind the photo.

So what I be doing wrong?

Have you tried group with previous.Ctrl g. This will put your image on the custom shape.

When you open a photo, it is automatically the Background Layer and you cannot place anything behind it. What you need to do is convert the Background Layer into a normal layer. To do this, double-click the Background Layer, then a pop-up will ask you to name it. Name it, then click OK. You can now place a layer behind the photo.

I am not at all clear on the effect that you are trying to replicate, but....

Are you trying to get your photo to show within the shape of the custom shape? Or, is it a matter that you want the shape to look like it is actually behind the photo?

If it is the first chase, then you have the photo as the top layer, the shape as the bottom layer, and you apply the Group With Previous to top layer. This is what was just suggested by JohnnyN.

However if it is the second case, use Ctrl T to reduce the size of the photo, leaving a good amount of transparency in the layer. This reduced size layer is the bottom layer and the shape layer is on top. Select the shape layer and the Move Tool. In the Options Bar, Arrange, select either the forward or behind options and see what happens.

That is my guess at what is happening. Sorry that I do not have the instructions that you are working from. What is the title of the lesson?

Thanks folks..

On the lesson where I'm trying to show the image behind the shape, the photo has already been reduced and is a layer.

Will letcha all know what transpires.....er...if it's transparent like me wants.
