What program are you using?
Where are these files coming from? What are the video/audio formats that you are importing and how? Where are you previewing them?
Details of your computer operating system and its resources (available RAM and free hard drive space) would be appropriate.
Is this the first time that you are doing this task or have you done this before and it has worked in the past?

Windows XP
Atholon Duel Core Processor
2Gig of RAM
256MB Graphics card
Premier Elements 4.0
I've pretty much imported every type of video (avi, mp4, mpeg) with editor in the past, but about a month ago I had to re-install window (lost a sector on the hard disk) and ever since the re-install I have not been able to view vidoe in the preview pane. However when I import video and play it and it isn't able to be viewed, I can double click on the preview window and see a paused version. I know the software is working because I can export video (un edited because I can't see it) just fine and view it in windows media player or other players.
The only thing that bothers me is when I installed windows I had codec problems with Windows media player, but those have been solved downloading the K-lite codec pack.
Thanks for any help you can give,
Ryan

There could be many reasons for your issue. But, in view of the history that you described, why not (as a first try) go looking for codecs issues for the problem videos. Use the free software gspot. This is the link for download and nice how to use instructions:

Another approach might be to "flush the preferences" as per the following link:

Did you do a complete uninstall/reinstall (Not Repair) of Premiere Elements 4 in the troubleshooting that you have done so far?

Well thank you for your effort on this one. I did in fact try a clean re-install of the software, but it did not help. I did the pref. flush as you suggested, but that didn't seem to do the trick. I did check gspot out to see if there was a codec issue, but it looks like k-lite has all the codecs covered. The only thing I find strange is that when viewing video through media player, it is using an app called fshow to load up the codecs. I'm thinking Adobe Premier doesn't know to use this and that is where the problem may be. But thanks for trying, I'll keep puttering around.

Ryan,
Carefully check out the possibility that the ffshow is the cause of the problem, not necessarily that Premiere Elements does not know to use it.
