There are millions of light to choose from. I need something inexpensive and that is reliable. Just wanted to get some input on what I should buy. Just going to get one light right now and don't want to spend more that $400. Would appreciate input and what I should or should not buy.
Thanks

Keep in mind what you want to shoot, will you be doing full length body shots or table top photography of maybe just products or both? I knew I would be doing both & that's why I searched for a 2 light kit. To keep in my budget I went with a lower wattage kit. I did find the Impact VSD 160 monolight kit that came with two monolights, two stands, umbrella, softbox, all cables & bulbs included for $300
A good unit for occasional use by a hobbyist, or beginning professional. It is a good choice for building a system - its built-in optical slave fires the flash without wires, from the light of any other flash system. Its flashtube is good for tens of thousands of pops, and is replaceable.
I was not expecting much when I purchased it but when I received it I was quite impressed. Here is the link click here (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?ci=0&shs=vsd160&sb=ps&pn=1&sq=desc&InitialSearch=yes&O=jsp%2Fcatalog.jsp&A=search&Q=*&bhs=t&Go.x=0&Go.y=0&Go=submit)
Few kits available, some with pair of softboxes or a pair of umbrellas. I liked the versatility of having both the umbrella & box.
For a basic home studio think it's a great place to start & eventually if you want to start upgrading pieces of your lighting kit at least you have almost everything you need.
Good luck & drop me a message if you have any questions or if you want to see photos taken with the kit or need photos of the kit itself.

if you have a flash why not just use it off camera thru an umbrella or softbox
that way you also have the option of taking it elsewhere and shooting without having to look for a socket in a tree somewhere :) and you can start off using ttl if you're new to things
and it's an easy kit to build on to as well.....add another 1, 2, 3 flashes
or of you're looking for non-strobe check out your local home depot
grab a couple of 6-footers, some natural bulbs, make a diffuser and yer good for less than $150

Not sure what you mean by six footer

I'll speculate that 6-footers means 6-foot fluorescent fixtures....
