Modify Selection Expand Results

Would anyone know why when using Modify--Expand on a rectangular selection, the four corners of the rectangular selection become rounded (truncated)? This is mot a visual artifact, because the stroked selection clearly shows the same characteristics, The selection is not feathered, and the expansion is 40 pixels.:confused:

I don't know the technical reason why but it does. The way round it is to use transform selection but in Elements that requires an add-on like Grants's Tools to do it.
