ValYou read my mind. I was thinking about her this morning and wondering why I hadn't see any posts from her for a while. Wow - scary! Glad to see she does pop in even if she is not posting.

Hi everyone,
Gosh you guys it sure makes a person feel good that somebody missed her. Yes I have not been on like I had been. I have been sick for over 2 months and ended up with pleurisy, it is a stinker:eek:. I had been really busy filling orders for my Fan Birds that I carved before Christmas. I have still been busy in this wonderful program PSE5 I am still amazed at what can be done. I have just finished creating some 2' x 6' banners for our Easter Service and have the file ready for uploading to a printing company.
Thanks again you guys are the greatest

Judy thanks for asking about my carvings. I posted some pictures in my gallery. I fell in love with the history and legend of Fan Carving.

Legends and Customs
During the Medieval Era, families lived in one-room log house that were covered with clay inside and out. There was just one window covered with a dried animal stomach during the winter and small smoky stone fireplace.

One family in northern Russia lived in such a house with a young boy who was very ill. He lay on his bed where he was covered with furs. People came from neighboring villages to try to help him regain his health, but all efforts were in vain.

It was the end of winter, and his father was sitting by the fireplace making baskets. Tired of lying in a stuffy house, the ill boy asked, “Dad is summer coming soon?”

His father replied, “Soon, son, very soon, just a little more and summer will be here.”

Then his father got an idea. He thought, “I will make a bird from this piece of wood. I will make it to look like a real bird with two wings and a tail. Maybe my son will think summer has come and the birds have returned. That would make him very happy>”

The father said, “I will make summer for you.”

He made a bird and hung it from the ceiling near the fireplace where his son could see it. The draft of the hot air streams from the fire caused the bird to spin. Its’ wings began to move and suddenly it became alive. Thus, the bird assumed magical powers and became known as the “Holy Ghost,” safe keeper of children and symbol of family happiness.

The son was filled with joy and his health improved. The people from the neighboring villages returned to ask how the boy was healed. When they heard the story about the bird, they asked the father to make a bird for their home to safeguard and protect their family.

I hope this wasn't too boring but you can see why I fell in love with it.

You are very welcome and my thanks to you for looking and asking. Gee that's what is so nice about demonstrating wood carving at the 3 festivals my husband ( he carves Victorian Rocking Horses) and I setup at. I get to talk about my birds and it does my heart good to see people excited about them too.

Hi Vesta,

Sorry you haven't been feeling well. Hope you are soon back to good health.

My husband, Don, is a woodcarver and he's done a few of those types of birds.

Take care.

I know that can be a nasty thing. Hope you get to feeling better soon. I love your birds. Do you show them at any craft fairs? I missed the Victorian Days last fall but was so looking forward to meeting you and your husband and seeing his horses. I remember falling in love with them the year before when I saw them there but didn't have a clue it was your booth. Hopefully I will not miss it this year.

Hang one of those beautiful birds up and watch it fly -- and get well soon. Let us know when you do another craft show and where.

Diana, thanks for the good wishes; is there any chance you might have a picture of your husbands birds.

Nancy, Thanks I am feeling better but pleurisy stays around too long. I did hope to see you this year. Yes I showed them for the first time at Victorian festival in Jerseyville and at the Heritage Days at the Lewis and Clark College in Godfrey. At Heritage Days we were all setup in the front yard of the campus it was beautiful like a small encampment in the 1840's. I was so delighted that so many people wanted them and loved the history behind them. One lady even order 15 hummingbirds.

Actually Jo I do hang one over my dinning room table on an string that you can barely see and one hanging on an ornament stand. They move around when ever the air is stirred.

Vesta, he's given away most of his fan birds. He only has this one, so I took some photos of it real quickly (not the best, but you'll get the idea).

Those are fantastic! My hubby is just getting into carving so he can replace missing trim on antique furniture. He has big ideas but so far not much experience. :D

Nancy, My husband was doing a lot of replacement carving for an antique dealer. some people confuse wood working with carving; he doesn't make furniture. Beware you might get the bug for carving. He always wanted me to carve but you have to have passion for it to become a carver. I found mine with the birds but for Christmas we provide some sort of ornament for our traditional ornament painting night. He taught me how to carve a Santa face and a small fawn; we are planning to carve a Nativity. He also does caricature carvings of our family and is on the grandkids now. They really are a hoot.

We may have to give him a call. I think my hubby is in over his head on this latest project - trying to carve claw feet. You never know though - he really is good when he sets his mind on something.
