View Full Version : Snagging a font from Mac to PC?

Is this possible? There is a font that comes loaded on Macs that I would like to use on my PC. It is just NOT available anywhere without paying big bucks. Is it possible to snag it from a Mac to load onto my PC (ie., have someone with a Mac send it to me)? Maybe the first question I should have asked, is, "is it legal?" Naturally, I don't want to do something that is not legal. It would be embarrassing to my son the lawyer if his mother ended up in Cyber Jail!

Hi, Shar. I don't know if it's legal, but aren't the Mac fonts a different file type? If I download fonts from, say, dafont.com, sometimes they come with both Mac and PC fonts. The Mac font names are ._fontname.ttf and the PC fonts are fontname.ttf (without the dot, underscore), so I'm not sure if they would be compatible.
If they were, I suppose it would be a matter of finding the font file on the Mac and copying it to a flash drive or other, then installing on PC.
I'll be interested to see the outcome of this discussion.

I would assume that you are looking for a font that actually comes with the Mac. Apple pays royalties for those fonts which are included in the price of the OS. Therefor - legally? no - possible to transfer - yes - depending on which font and if it is "hidden" or not.
As Jiminey Cricket used to say - "Let your conscience be your guide".

Well, if it's not legal, that settles it for me. I won't pursue it. I have a very tender conscience, and would prefer to sleep rather than have that (exquisite) font! boo-hoo :(

Shar,
Which font is it? Maybe we can find something very similar?

It's Zapfino. I have Scriptina, which is similar, but it's just not as elegant. And I get obsessive, I know....once I want something, I go to extremes hunting it down. I will take a deep breath and be grateful for all the wonderful fonts I have. Like anyone would notice on my LOs anyway!

Hi Shar,
Have you tried this font site?

Well Shirl! You are awesome! I thought I had scoured EVERY free font site in vain (literally, spending HOURS doing so!). Thanks so much. I not only got the font I lusted after, but 4 versions of it. Now I'm going to have to go make a page so I can use it/them!

Extrenes?! Does that mean you are buying a Mac  ducking and running …

Grant....oh that I could! But like I said....new camera hardly out of the packaging and all, I don't even bring it up. My cpu is only about a year old, and I am content. But someday I would like a Mac. Maybe when I upgrade to full PS? If I didn't travel all over the country several times a year to visit my grandchildren, maybe I could afford one. But the kids are more important to me.

I almost had a moment of panic, as I went to print out my sample page, and it didn't appear to be loaded. Then I realized I was looking for plain ol' Zapfino, when in fact, this version is
LT Zapfino
The LT must be for PCs. You'd think when I did searches, if there was anything with Zapfino in the name, it would have shown up. But I'm not even going to waste brain time on it. I am THRILLED to have tested it SUCCESSFULLY.
Thanks again (& I know what you mean....the few times I've actually been able to help someone on the forum has made me feel wonderful).

Oh no! Not another font site! There goes my afternoon... :D
Glad you found your font!
(Thanks for the link - hadn't seen this one before!)

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but Linotype does own the copyright to those fonts listed on that site, and I don't know that they're really free. They have 16 pages of Linotype's typefaces, many of which are commercial fonts.
There are definitely some "free" fonts up there as well, but I think it's largely a front to sell display ads in bulk.
fwiw,
Rick

The 'LT' actually stands for Linotype - that's the nomenclature they use when the fonts are purchased individually (i.e. not bundled with a computer).

I've downloaded a *few* free fonts in my time and I've often wondered whether the various sites really have the rights to distribute them. How can we determine if a font site is legit?

Well, I certainly hope I didn't do something naughty. I was able to download without being charged, but if the site is illegitimate. . . I will be sad if I can't keep these, but like I said, better to be able to sleep at night.

A while back I found a free font coverter on the web to use on my Mac to convert Mac fonts to PC and PC fonts to Mac. It was necessary when I was using both platforms regularly.
Try googling Mac to PC font converter and see what comes up.

Well that's worrying!! I am so sorry if I have directed you all to the 'wrong' type of font site!! I had no idea that there was anything wrong with it, if I had I would most certainly not have passed it on.
