I just installed PSE7 after 5 years using PSE4. I am learning new things in this program. Here is my dilema...I go into the brushes and try to use the move tool to scroll up or down to select a set of brushes and it automatically jumps to a set and closes the brush window. In other words, I cannot scroll up and down to get the exact set of brushes I want to use. Any suggestions would be helpful and appreciated.
Thanks,
smith

I may be misunderstanding your issue because...

In the Photoshop Elements 7 toolbar, there is a Move Tool and a Brush Tool. You hit one or the other. The two are not activated together.

To get to Brushes:
a. You click on the Brush Tool in the Toolbar
or
b. Use the keyboard shortcut "B" to get to the Brushes

I cannot envision a way to use the "Move Tool" to scroll through the Brush Presets (top upper left of interface). Instead of "Move Tool", are you referring to the mouse white single edged arrow but you are still in Brush Tool mode? Could you explain further?

You are right, as I read over what I wrote, I realized it was confusing. I select the brush tool and then go into the brushes. I try to use the scroll bar to select a set of brushes and as soon as I place the cursor on the scroll bar, the brush sets disappear and a set is selected out of nowhere and usually one I do not want. The only way I can select a set of brushes is by using the up and down arrow keys.

Thanks for the further details.

You could try a classical approach to odd behavior, namely, deleting the Preferences file.

1. Click on the Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 icon to bring up (open to) the Welcome Screen. Then as you are hold down the keys Ctrl+Alt+Shift, click on "Editor". A dialog box should appear to which your reply is YES.

ATR,
If I follow your directions deleting preferences, how will this effect PSE7? In other words, will it hurt anything to do this?

Think about this as rebuilding the preferences rather than deleting them.

This technique is recommended for a variety of problems that defy the routine troubleshooting rationale.

I have had this same problem since installing PSE 7. Occasionally I can open it and work with the brushes for a few min before it starts happening. But usually it just will not allow brush selection from the get go.
I select Brush, open the brush picker, and click on the down arrow to select a brush, when I put my curser on the scroll bar to see all my selection or to manuver to my brush it closes. I tried this fix, and that didn't work at all. I'd love to solve this, it's driving me nuts.
Thanks

ATR,

I don't understand the brush sizes and all. Can't you adjust any of the "soft" brushes up or down in size by using the left and right "bracket" keys? So why do you need so many choices? I haven't had that much experience needing any special shaped brush.

It's not a matter of brush size, it's a matter of choosing what type of brush, I have lots of different brushes, from lots of sources, including brushes I've made for my self. Grundge brushes, flower brushes, stitch brushes, ect. I think your focus is on editing photos, mine is on Digital Scrapbooking.

I, too, experienced this problem when I first installed PE7. It seems that PE7 will tolerate only a certain number of brush files in the presets folder.

I got around it by moving all the brush files to a seperate directory, leaving only the PE installed files in the original location. Haven't had a problem since doing that.

Good luck...
