I have a 5-year-old DELL PC and there is nothing wrong with it so I would like to keep it as long as I can. It is 80 GB. When I got it that was a lot. A number of months ago I asked some EHD questions and the advice I received was to add an EHD for my photographs and one for back up. I have added a WD 320 GB EHD and was ready to put my pics on it when I read a post that said that wasn't a good idea as it would take a significant amount of time to load the pics. My concern is that I only had 11 GB free space on my HD. I make sure to delete any pics that I really don't need. In addition I have added a WD 500 GB EHD (which is probably overkill!!).
Questions:
If I delete pics from Organizer including deleting from HD will the pics still be on the EHD. (I think they will be but I need a little reassurance!!)
How do I move everything except PSE and my pics off the 320 EHD so that everything including my pics will backup on the 500 EHD. I would like to keep the 320 EHD specifically for PSE and pics.
Can I then set up both EHDs to back up PSE and my pics?
I hope this isn't too confusing!! Thanks. :)

I have an EHD and I do not notice a delay in loading my pictures into the Editor. Of course, this depends on whether your computer has USB 1.1 or USB 2.0. Mine has high speed USB 2.0 which is noticeably faster. You should check to see which version of USB you have. (Here's how to tell (http://www.usbman.com/Guides/checking_for_usb_2.htm)) If you have USB 1.1, it will probably seem slow.
To move your pics from where they are now to where you want them to be, you MUST use PSE commands. You should not do this in Windows.
Let me say this again.

Best to use Folder Location View in PSE to perform the move.
Do not ... do not ... do not ... delete photos from your Organizer. There is no point to this activity for either moving files or making backups. The only reason to delete a photo from your Organizer is if you never want to find it again. With all this new space, I say ... go ahead, keep all your photos.
Backups ... the best way to make backups is to use the PSE command File->Backup Catalog. This makes sure that EVERYTHING you need is indeed backed up. (While you can make a backup by copying everything ... catalog and photos ... to another drive, I don't recommend this...).

Paige, thanks for the explanation.
How do I set up My Pictures file so that my pics will upload to the 320 EHD? Do I still open them from organizer?
Once I have my pics on that EHD and backed up how do I remove them from my computer?
Thanks again.

In folder location view in the PSE Organizer, you can move the photos to your EHD there. Create a folder on the EHD named "My Pictures" or whatever (do this in Windows). You might have to put a dummy photo in this new folder and import it into the Organizer for the Folder Location View to recognize the EHD "My Pictures" folder. Then, in the Organizer, simply drag the folders containing your photos to the EHD's "My Pictures" folder (just like you would do in Windows ... but don't do it in Windows).
This moves the photos. When complete, they are no longer on your computer's hard drive.
You may want to change the settings in the Adobe File Downloader so that they now download to the EHD.

If you should find that your computer does not have a USB 2.0 port, expansion cards are available from several sources. For example, Newegg has cards with 4 USB 2.0 ports for $14.00. I installed one in my 6 year old HP and it has worked just fine.

Thanks for all the info. Not being technology ept I'm taking this in steps. Several weeks ago I added a Logitech Premium 4-Port USB 2.0 Hub. So step #1 is completed!! No problems yet!!
