Just bought this card and after taking several photos I have discovered it is not compatible with my computer:(
I have a built in slot to take various cards in the side of my Sony Vaio but it will not recognise this. Does anyone know if a card reader would work?

Sue,

Yes, a card reader would work, as long as it is explicitly for "SDHC"... the "HC" being High Capacity. It should be relatively inexpensive, too. (I actually have three of them that came "free" bundled with SDHC cards I bought at Costco - don't know if you have Costco)

I had the same problem with my laptop's built-in reader when I got my first 2Gb SD card... and it wasn't even a SDHC. It was just that my hardware pre-dated the 2Gb card design and couldn't handle it.

Hi Sue,

I use SanDisk Ultra II CF cards in my Canon XTi. My Delkin Devices card reader that has four slots:

CF/MD (which is the one that takes my card)
xD/SM
SD MMC RSmmc mini SD
MS Duo MS Pro Duo MS MS Pro

I would assume yours would fit in the same slot as mine.

But, I'd like to tell you about my experience with card readers. I purchase two different brand multi-slot card readers from Office Max for about $15 each, and had to return both of them. They accepted my card, but wouldn't download the photos to my computer. In fact, they corrupted the card so that I couldn't even get my USB cable from my camera (with the card in it) to the computer to download them. I could still see the photos while the card was in the camera, but couldn't get them off.

On the advice of the instructor of a photography class I was taking, I bought a professional card reader from a camera shop. She said many of the mainstream (less expensive) card readers don't handle the high capacity ultra type cards very well. This card reader was able to get my photos off the card I thought was corrupted.

This reader is Delkin Devices Hi-Speed USB 2.0 DDReader 38. It cost me $38 at the camera shop where I purchased it, but it was worth it after my experience with the other two readers.

Delkin's website is www.delkin.com (http://www.delkin.com)

Thank you for your replies:) The card is a Sandisk SDHC card and Sandsik apparently do a micromate card reader at around £12.00 so I think I will give this a go. I have downloaded my photos via the USB but popping the card in is much easier:)

I have a SanDisk Micromate and it works great. It really is no different than "popping in" the card into your computer's built in card reader. You just pop the car into the Micromate, then place it into an available USB port. Just like a flash drive.

Twice I've had problems downloading .NEF files from my D80 that somehow got corrupted during the process, including on the 4 GB SanDisk Ultra II SD card itself. I always use the built in card reader in my PC but have also used an inexpensive card reader from SanDisk that I've had for a while.

I think I've narrowed the problem down to software (ACDSee Pro 2.5) but I'm not positive. In any case, I'm putting the switch on the card to "read only" when I insert it into my reader to make sure the files on the card itself don't somehow get corrupted.

Since this happened with the same card, I've pulled it from service. I plan on running some more experiments prior to our trip to St. Martin, where I plan on filling up a bunch of cards.

Another SanDisk Micromate user here and it works great (with my 8GB Ultra II) - was a good deal as it came with the card. Only problem I've had is that it's so small I have to be careful not to lose it. I do have a higher end reader that cost more than the SD card/Micromate combined and to be honest it doesn't work any better and it's only virtue is that it will read a wide assortment of cards.

My Pentax P&S can accept the SDHC cards, so I bought one, not aware that my SD card reader (built into my HP computer) wouldn't read them.

Picked up a Targus USB reader at WalMart for $6 US. I put the card in the reader and the reader in a USB port. Works great. I didn't need all the other card types b/c my in-computer reader can handle them.
