Hello

I am a total beginner in photoshop and I was wondering if someone in this forum could tell me what are the steps to re-create the effect of decomposition/fragmentation the designer used for the poster "The Tracey Fragments"

I would really appreciate any help to re-create this effect.

Thank you http://photoshoptechniques.com/forum/images/smilies/60.gif

There could be many ways to recreat this effect. One way would be to with the Rectangular Marquee tool, individually make rectangles, copy them to their own separate layers, then free tranform the selection and move it around. Then go back to the original background and delete it.

Another approach could be to use the Rectangular Marquee tool and make random selections then delete. Then on a separate layer (or layers) make the smaller squares/rectangles, etc. using different pics. From a close up view the "fragments" look like different elements rather than from Tracey herself.

I'll give i a try later today with a pic I have.

The small images look different to me too ... and it looks like they have been distorted too. That just adds to the illusion that they are flying away :)

Hi, this is a similar concept.
The fragmenting is done with a brush.
I like the effect.

One I did for the EZ-Challenge

Thanks for the link to the cool tut! This is a lot like Corey Barkers vid, but looks easier to do.

Val,

Can you point me in the direction of Corey's video? I've been looking for it half the evening, thinking that it produced a similar effect but I can't seem to locate it! I've tried the Subscriber videos, the Killer tips.....I've even checked through Kev's posts because I'm certain he tried it out and posted a picture, but to no avail.

EDIT: Found it HERE (http://www.planetphotoshop.com/scatter-brush-masking.html)

What a fun effect. I gave it a shot...loved the effect of my first try:

I don't know if you can read the text. It says: At our age it's easy to FALL TO PIECES over another birthday.

Obviously, I'm using this for a birthday card for a friend.

Thank you so much for posting the link and for the tutorial. It was very easy to follow.

Isn't it amazing the effects we can achieve with wrong turns or playing around? Very cool image!
