I recently upgraded to PSE 7.0 and sometimes use the option to edit a photo in photoshop. When I open the photo in PSE it first opens in camera raw and then when "open image" is clicked then opens in PSE.. When I use the "other options" and open in photoshop the photo does not open Camera Raw and goes directly in PS. Is there a way to open in ACR on the way to photoshop? Thanks for any suggestions.

I'm not sure I quite understand what you're doing. Where are you opening the image from? The Organizer? Where are you seeing "Other Options?"

When I open an image in the organizer that I want to edit,I select edit. There is an option "other options" that allows you to go to Photoshop instead of an edit option of Full,Guided or quick.
If I open the photo in Full it opens in Raw first and then is opened into the PSE edit window. If I select other options to open in Photoshop it bypasses ACR. Is there a Was to open into ACR and then CS4 from photos in the PSE organizer as I continue to use the organizer for storing and organizing my photos . Appreciate any suggestions

That I don't understand. I have CS2 and if I open from a RAW file in the Organizer it will go to ACR in CS2. Must be something different about CS4 that I don't understand. Maybe someone who has CS4 can help. I didn't think it was possible to open a RAW file in Photoshop without going through ACR.

I assume that we're talking about opening a RAW image and not a JPEG, TIF or PSD - is that correct?
I'm guessing that you're also talking about the FIX tab in the Organiser which has a 'More Options' link at the bottom of the list. This reveals two options on my system. Edit in Photoshop; Edit in External Editor.
If I select a Raw image in the Organiser and then use the Edit in Photoshop from More Options then it opens Photoshop and then the image appears in the ACR window within Photoshop.
I am running PS CS but I can't see how you can open a RAW image in anything but an ACR window.

I suspect the OP has both PSE and CS installed, and is talking about opening JPGs in ACR. CS4 has several choices in Preferences as tot he way it handles TIFFs and JPGs, and can be set to ALWAYS open JPGs in ACR first. If the is not set that way, then CS opens directly without ACR.
The OP needs to go into CS4 Edit?>Preferences>File Handling...
Then click the Camer Raw Preferences button, and at the bottom of the subsequent dialog obx are the drop downs with the choices for JPGs and TIFFs.
If you select "Automatically open all supported..." it wil always default to ACR for that file type.

thanks all for the suggestions. Codebreaker you are describing what I am doing. I have PSE and CS4. I select a RAW file in PSE organizer and select edit. I click on "more options" and click on edit with photoshop. The photo opens in photoshop without opening in ACR first. If I open the same photo in "Full Edit" in PSE it opens in ACR and then I open image to PSE. Is there a setting in PSE that would affect or control this? Any suggestions?

it is a RAW file. a NEF file format from a d300. This file opens in ACR when I open it in PSE but somehow goes directly to CS4 when I select other options in the edit window.

That's strange behaviour. One thing that has been posted previously is that Nikons own S/W for Raw files can have a tendency to Hi-jack Photoshop. Do you have this installed and if so could you try removing it?

I do not have the nikon software installed. I did not have this problem with PSE 6 but that version froze frequently. I am not sure what to do, as I want to have ACR when I open in Photoshop as the ACR version for PSE doesn't have the many adjustments that are available in ACR Versions 5.1 and above that are available in cs4. Is this something anyone else has seen in going from PSE7 to CS4

I assume that when you open the file normally in CS4 it goes to ACR in CS4. What you might want to try is in the PSE7 preferences setting CS4 as an alternate editor by browsing directly to the CS4 exe file - and then picking the alternate editor. I'd be really surprised if that didn't work. Seems to me I had a problem when I had a CS3 Beta and PSE5 didn't want to recognize it unless I told it exactly which file to open as the alternate editor.

"...PSE doesn't have the many adjustments that are available in ACR Versions 5.1 and above that are available in cs4...."
Read post #9 in this thread for the options available in ACR running under PSE.:-

There are much less options available in ACR under PSE because PSE is about 1/10 the the cost of the full Photoshop.

thanks for the feedback. I did check with the Adobe site and got back a reply stating that the problem I am having with the photos going directly to CS4 is a "known Issue " with PSE 7. I guess I have to choose between frequent crashes from "runtime Errors" in PSE 6 or my current problems with version 7
