Hi everyone,

I wanted to ask the S5 users if they use an external flash & if so, which one? I was looking at either the Canon 220Ex Speedlite or the HFDC1. I was leaning toward the 220, but the guy in the camera store seemed to think I would have to meter it manually. From what I read online, I didn't think so, but then again, what do I know. :o I found I really need it if I am using any higher shutter speeds.

Speedlite: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/121598-GREY/Canon_2262A006_220EX_TTL_Flash.html

HF-DC1 (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/367068-REG/Canon_9940A001_HF_DC1_Flash.html#reviews)

Thanks for any suggestions!

The Canon Powershot S5 will work with any of the Canon EX line of speedlights, 220EX 430EX and EX II 580EX and EX II. Even though the 220EX is a nice compact flash it won't do any more for you then increase the output of light. If used on the cameras hotshoe without a bracket and off camera shoe cord it will still give smack in the face lighting as it does not tilt or swivel. I would suggest looking at the 430EX or 430EX II flash units. They tilt and swivel as well as having a higher guide number. There are still a few stores ( Amazon and Adorama ) that have the 430EX flash in stock for $200 and the 430EX II is available now with a rebate that brings the price down to about $239.

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback lowbone. I will take that into consideration. I will say that any reviews I read about the 220EX were good. I know one thing I liked about it was that it was small, so esily transportable.

See, I"m not sure what I need - I do know I need something for when I use a faster shutter speed for pets & children.

Anyway, I will check out the stores you mentioned and continue researching.

Again, thanks for sharing!
