So, I created this huge hour long slide show for my son’s graduation. Used thousands of photos, of which half are high res 3-4 mb files, from folders on the c drive from several users as well as external drives. Didn’t realize photos in slide show were merely links to all those scattered folders. C drive is almost full so I tried to move photo folders to external drive. Half of slide show went black apparently because link not valid because photo was moved. Is there a way to Save As the project so it pulls the actual photo files into a designated folder? I tried to export the project but it’s too big for my laptop to handle. If export can be successful would the project then be editable? I’m still adding to the show and making edits. Help.

My slideshow experience is rather limited and with version 2, but none of the experts have shown yet so I will give you my views. First a few questions that may help the experts help when they come along.

First, what version of Elements are you using?

Are you doing this only in PSE or are you using Premiere Elements or another slideshow program?

How are you making the slideshow.

How do you plan to display the slideshow (projector & screen, digital frame, tv dvd player, computer screen)

What is the resolution (pixel dimensions) of your chosen display?

The few slideshows I have done I have started by selecting the photos and putting them in a collection. Then I edit, caption, and put the images in order. Next I create my slideshow using the collection. Then I "publish" the slideshow as a pdf or vcd. This makes an independent file that includes all the photos but is not editable for changes. I need to go back to the saved creation or collection, make changes, and publish a new version if I want to edit the slideshow.

The rule of thumb I have learned re slideshows is to do as much of the work as possible in the collection/album before going to the creation step.

I've had a thought about your situation. If you've a lot of fiddling in the creation step of the slideshow the fiddles will be lost however.

First reconnect all. Then do a "Find" > By History > used in creations > your slideshow. This should put all of your chosen images in the photowell. Select all and put them in a collection(album) "grad slideshow". You can edit, order and caption at this point if you like. Do a file>export setting the export size to match your display resolution, (use renaming if they are in a collection order) and send them to a special slideshow folder. (The images in this folder will not be automatically added to the Organizer unless the new folder is in a watched folder)

When you find more photos add them to the collection/album and add resized copies to the slideshow folder. I think you can make a slideshow from the folder without adding it to Organizer but you can easily import the folder into Organizer. Perhaps make a second collection/album "grad slideshow-resized".

Someone more experienced with more recent versions may come along with some other ideas.

Karin,

Thank you for taking the time to respond. Other than the monster slide show I did, I am a very uninformed user. I can’t seem to catch how PSE puts things together. I’m actually very dumb about stuff like this. I have some responses and more questions.

First, what version of Elements are you using? PSE 4

Are you doing this only in PSE or are you using Premiere Elements or another slideshow program? JUST PSE4.

How are you making the slideshow. I’M NOT REALLY SURE HOW TO ANSWER THIS OR IF I CAN ANSWER THIS CORRECTLY. BUT I THINK I DID A CREATION AND STARTED IMPORTING PHOTOS AND MUSIC.

How do you plan to display the slideshow (projector & screen, digital frame, tv dvd player, computer screen). I RAN THE SHOW AT THE GRADUATION PARTY DIRECTLY FROM PSE. I WOULD LIKE TO ALSO PUT IT TO DVD TV. I’VE NOT THOUGHT ABOUT DIGITAL FRAME AND COMPUTER SCREEN BUT THESE WOULD BE NICE TOO.

What is the resolution (pixel dimensions) of your chosen display? DO YOU MEAN MY LAPTOP SCREEN (ON WHICH I BUILT THE CREATION)? 1024x768 HIGHEST COLOR QUALITY (32 BIT).

The few slideshows I have done I have started by selecting the photos and putting them in a collection. YES. THIS IS WHAT I THINK I SHOULD HAVE DONE WHEN I STARTED TRYING TO LOCATE THE PHOTO FILES.

Then I edit, caption, and put the images in order. Next I create my slideshow using the collection. Then I "publish" the slideshow as a pdf or vcd. THIS MAKES SENSE TO PUT TO A PDF. CAN I STILL DO THIS TO THE SLIDE SHOW I HAVE? This makes an independent file that includes all the photos but is not editable for changes. I need to go back to the saved creation or collection, make changes, and publish a new version if I want to edit the slideshow.

The rule of thumb I have learned re slideshows is to do as much of the work as possible in the collection/album before going to the creation step. I WILL DO THIS FOR SURE.

I've had a thought about your situation. If you've a lot of fiddling in the creation step of the slideshow the fiddles will be lost however.

First reconnect all. I DID THIS. PHOTOS ARE BACK AND SLIDESHOW HAS NO BLACK IMAGES.

Then do a "Find" > By History > used in creations > your slideshow.
This should put all of your chosen images in the photowell.

Select all and put them in a collection(album) "grad slideshow". CAN I SELECT ALL AND COPY AND PASTE IN A COLLECTION?
You can edit, order and caption at this point if you like.

Do a file>export setting the export size to match your display resolution and send them to a special slideshow folder. (use renaming if they are in a collection order). WILL THIS SPECIAL FOLDER BECOME A “COLLECTION” FROM WHICH THE CURRENT SLIDESHOW PULLS THE PHOTOS OR WILL IT BE SIMPLY A FOLDER FROM WHICH THE GRAD SLIDESHOW LINKS TO THE PHOTOS?
(The images in this folder will not be automatically added to the Organizer unless the new folder is in a watched folder) HOW DO I MAKE A FOLDER A “WATCHED” FOLDER. I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHICH STEP ACTUALLY POINTS THE GRAD SLIDESHOW TO THE NEW FOLDER WITH ALL THE PHOTOS.

Karin, if it sounds like I'm not getting it, I'm sure I'm not. Sorry. But I appreciate your time and efforts to help. I just wanted to make sure I understood your comments before I take a shot at. I don't want to make a goof that put the slideshow in even more jeopardy. Thanks again, Karin. :)
