My hubby bought me the PSE7 for Christmas but I don't have the previous versions. Should I try an older version first? It's kind of overwhelming to me. Hey is there a Photoshop for Dummies book I can read?

Just jump right in with 7!
Instead of shelling out for an earlier version, put your money into a membership here http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com and you'll find hundreds of videos and tutorials to get you going as well as the newsletter.

Since you have no experience with PSE it will not matter what version you jump in on. It will take you a while to get the hang of it but you can always ask all the question you want here and find all kinds of help. Remember no questions are to silly to ask. I think most of us here learned by asking questions and getting help from all the friends here.

No Jo, jump straight into v7. After you subscribe, I suggest you do the layer tutorial first because that is what makes PSE such a magnificent program.

There is a Photoshop Elements 7 for Dummies book out there. But there are plenty of books out there as well. For instance there is Photoshop Elements 7: The Missing Manual by Barbara Brundage and also The Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 Book for Digital Photographers by Scott Kelby and Matt Kloskowski (not yet available).
But I agree with Jo, subscribe to the Photoshop Elements Techniques Newsletter and visit the site and this forum often for tips and tutorials.
If you got any questions, just ask.

tmfan43, jump right in. The learning curve isn't any different between the versions, so you may as well begin with the latest.

NO, just go for it. In some ways, each version gets a little more user friendly. Elements is deep--there's almost no limit to what you can do with, and some of it can be very complex. BUT (and this is the beauty of it) it's also very simple. You can start off right away with basic fixes and enhancements to your photos and then just learn and grow from there.
Betcha in a year, you'll be here answering questions for the new newbies!

Everyone's given you great advice to just jump in with version 7, and I agree. I also believe that you should also follow Jo's suggestion into buying a photoshopelementsuser subscription. The magazines are great...and the on-line tutorial library is unbelievable.
Your best bet is to follow through some of the tutorials just to understand the different commands and features being taken advantage of--that along will give you ideas for your own image editting.
