View Full Version : How to see my ISO

Erg.
So, I finally bit the bullet and upgraded to PSE 7 (from 5). I love it so far, but when viewing my image properties for my D50, I cannot find the ISO (neither on brief nor complete).

For photos taken with my Lumix, it's fine - I can see the ISo.

Anyone know what's up with this?

Thanks!

Tracy

Do you look at your ISO by going to File menu/File Info/Camera Data 1?

I think I remember reading somewhere that all EXIF data is not written in the same language and might not be readable by all software.

Erin is right - some cameras put the ISO data in maker notes that you won't see in Elements although bit surprised the D50 doesn't show - my D80 does. If you can't see it in Elements you would have to use a more comprehensive EXIF data viewer. I use ExifToolGUI which shows an incredible amount of extra EXIF data that you won't see in Elements.

Doesn't Organizer show the camera data? I never use Organizer so I'm just wondering. Bridge (for CS4) does as do many other 3rd party browsers.

Try FastStone Image Viewer, it is a superb browser.

To add a couple more freebies to the list:

IrfanView: Image viewer, with Information tab on menu to show detailed EXIF data. Found at www.irfanview.com (http://www.irfanview.com)
Opanda IExif Viewer: Not an image viewer, but a very handy EXIF data viewer for your own images and those posted on photo sharing sites. Found at http://www.opanda.com/en/iexif/download.htm

From the Organizer, right-click on an image and select Properties. The camera data (exif) contains the details of the shot, included the ISO.

Unfortunately, not all camera manufacturers follow the EXIF standard (if there even is one) with respect to what fields they use for ISO data. My Canons have had this problem over the years, but I believe they're finally moving toward the standard. Elements is looking for that standard field utilization; if the ISO data is in another field, Elements won't see it.

Thank you Chuck, Jerry, Tony, and Erin -

I'm referring to the organizer when I was looking at exif data.

I've done about everything to get the ISO for my D50 to display, but no luck. Probably a dif. language/ field naming thing. I did by my D50 in Japan, but really that should be an issue..

Anyway, I do have irfanview, and also full photoshop, which displays fine. I would just like to see all my EXIF data at a glance, and ISO is a pretty important component to knowing why a shot is good/ bad.

Curiosity got the better of me and I found a D50 image on Flickr and took at look at it with EXIFTool which is a very complete way of looking at EXIF, IPTC and Maker Notes data. As I suspected there is no ISO data in the EXIF data - Nikon put it in the Maker Notes and I guess Elements isn't set up to read that.

Nikon must have listened to the complaints because my D80 does have the ISO in the standard EXIF data (but they did also still leave it in Maker notes too)

Here's a thread that discusses it - it does mention that Picasa can read it but I just checked and it didn't - at least for Picasa3 which I have.

Thanks for that, Tony.

After further Googling 'D50 missing ISO Exif', I found quite a few hits with the same complaint.

But this is what's weird - a lot of my older photos, taken in the first year with that camera, have the iso info! And I'm sure I would have noticed it missing in all my other ones sooner than this, so I decided to blame PSE 7, (since I was using LR before) and thinking it may have deleted this info (I haven't imported my older photos)...

Then I did a test, and shot some new images, loaded them into my pc, did not open them or let them near PSE 7... Still, when I open PS (full), and look in File Info - no iso.

Very odd, indeed.

Up to this year, I was using XP and Lightroom; I got a new machine with Vista. I hadn't installed LR, but just did so an hour ago to check on the iso thing, and it still shows the ISO info.

So, I'm just baffled. I'm going to boot up my old XP box which still has the original copy of all my photos and see what if that's any different. In either case, I'll probably have to use Lightroom since I often like to see my data!

Tracy, I believe that Lightroom is 'smarter' than other software that can read EXIF data, i.e., it may have some camera-specific tables that it calls upon when interpreting the data.

In any event, Lightroom makes a great front end for processing in Elements, although I don't know how well it plays with the Organizer. I use LR instead of Organizer or Bridge for basic image management.

I just tested Chuck's theory and he's correct. Lightroom is smarter than PSE7. I opened a D50 jpeg in Lightroom and then the ISO showed. From Lightroom I opened the original in PSE7 and the ISO wasn't there. I then did the same thing but opened a copy from Lightroom and the ISO appeared. So Lightroom when it makes a copy is putting the ISO in the correct spot in the EXIF data so that PSE7 can now see it.

Just a guess but I suspect if you shot RAW instead of JPEG then Elements would see the ISO data because RAW files may be more standard from a PSE/ACR perspective.
