I'm not into new year resolutions. But 09 is an exception e.g. with pse6. I'm going to use the organizer. I solemnly swear I'm going to use the organizer the right way. In '08 I managed to turn order into chaos and I don't like the result. So yesterday and today I've been working with the organizer. I used to hate the slogan "a place for everything and everything in its place". However, I think that person had a good point.

I really like Organizer. It is not perfect but if you learn how to use it it can be quite powerful.
Check out www.photofanatic.com the companion website to Michael Slater's Organizer v3 book. It will give you some good Organizer basics even though it is for an old version. (I have his v2 book)

Congratulations on your decision. Here is some advice for you when you start using Organizer.
Put your energy into tagging, adding captions, notes, GPS locations in the Organizer. Do not put your energy into moving photos around from one Windows folder location to another Windows folder location, renaming folders in Windows, renaming files in Windows. Why? Because using Organizer, you have a much more powerful way to find your photos than anything you can come up with in Windows (and you'll put less effort into the Organizer than you will put into Windows).
Use Organizer to find your photos from now on. Do not use Windows to find your photos. If you need a portion of your photos for non-PSE purposes (for example, to send to a friend), use Organizer to find them and then File->Export to write the photos to a temporary location for non-PSE use.
Never (that's never, not even once, don't even think about it) move, rename or delete your photos using Windows. Any time you want to move, rename or delete your photos, you do that from the Organizer.

Thank you for that good bit of advice. I will follow it. I don't ever want a repeat of the mess I created heretofore by failure to use the organizer.

I too would like to use elements (5) to catalog all of my pix....however all of my files are on Picasa and if I move them to elements does that mean they are in two places...so twice the file size???? I do try to minimize my files and have some of them in organizer but the majority in Picasa I'm confused....Sharon In No Calif....cold but sunny:p

Both Picasa and Organizer are indexing databases. That is to say, they do not store photo files anywhere on their own. They essentially simply create a list of the paths for each of the photos.
If you had photos stored in your hard drive when you first installed Picasa you might have noticed Picasa searched the location of all the photos in your hard drive and displayed them as thumbnails. If you right click on any of the thumbnails and left click on Properties, you'll see that the file location is still where you stored it initially.

Hi heysly, the organizer does NOT store your photos, it only helps you locate them.
It is a database that catalogs a link to your pictures and shows a thumbnail of your images.
The actual files are in your folders on your harddrive.
I don't know how Picasa works.
Investigate thoroughly so you understand what's what.
Good luck

I finally gave in and started using orgnizer about a month ago. I know you are always supposed to open photos in organizer. If you have a jpg file that you want to edit in ACR don't you have to open that file through windows?

The Organizer and Editor are functionally integrated with each other even though they are separate programs. Have you install the program and can't find out how to launch Adobe Photoshop Elements (which is the organizer)?

I know you are always supposed to open photos in organizer.
I know of no such rule.
The rule is that, if you use the Organizer, you should not move photos in Windows; you should not rename photos in Windows; you should not delete photos in Windows.
If you have a jpg file that you want to edit in ACR don't you have to open that file through windows?
No. In fact, I don't see a way to open a .jpg in ACR via Windows.
In the PSE Editor, choose Open As... then select Camera Raw from the list of file types.

I guess the approach to organizing and tagging is different than with the PC (which I have), but Adobe still claims that PSE for the Mac helps Organize...

No, it does not have an Organizer.

... When you have the Mac version of Elements you also get Adobe Bridge (the same one that you get in Photoshop).
Its a great piece of software and you can use it to browse anything on your computer ... :)

When I edit a pic in PSE6 and then "Save As" I give it a new name. Is that the same?
Thanks Paige.

I am not a Mac user, but the Mac PSE6 does not have the organizer, it has bridge instead. Mac PSE6 users, help!

No problem, since you are doing this from within PSE; furthermore, if you give it a new name, the original is still safe and its location kept in the database.

Saving a file under a new name has nothing to do with my advice, which told you not to rename a file in Windows. You are not renaming a file. You are saving your edits as an entirely new file, and you are doing it the proper way.
(also, related to your question, you do not want to save an edit under the original file name as this destroys your original, which is bad ... but since you're not doing that ... don't start!)

Thanks for the replies, I kinda tho't that Picasa "found" all of my pix but I didn't realize they all stayed wherever they came from. I won't worry about too many memories when opening in organiser...I do like the tags etc that are available there. Sharon
