When I open a folder of images in Editor in PE5, how can I ALWAYS have them open as Thumbnails rather than List/Tiles/etc?

Hi philcon,
welcome to the forum, when you'v opened your file
in the menu bar at the top there is a small folder icon
with a downwards pointing arrow, open the menu and
you can select your option.

Hi, welcome aboard!

If your images are in "My Pictures" folder, they will always open as Thumbnails (default) in the Editor. If they are in another folder, such "Shared Pictures," this won't happen. You have to click on the View Menu icon and select Thumbnails; unfortunately it's not sticky and you have to do this every time. I have PSE4 and PS7 (Windows XP) and this has been my experience. Fortunately, there seems to be a way of fixing this problem, although I haven't tried it yet. Check this thread (http://www.elementsvillage.com/forums/showthread.php?t=42908&highlight=thumbnails+view).

Hi Sepiana
Clearly mine is a shared problem/frustration!
I've checked the thread and done what it said: it works, but as far as I can see, only image by image by the same route. When I first read it I thought that, done once, it would then be 'sticky' for the rest of that folder when opened in the normal way in Editor. But no.
What does seem to work is making all of my image folders into sub-folders of My Pictures. They then seem automatically to open as Thumbnails. So it just means getting used to this new structure of folders in My Documents, which will be worth it not to have the hassle in Editor for every image.
I couldn't have done this before since I did not know that the default opening of My Pictures was in Thumbnail, so thanks everyone for your help

The only workaround that I know of short of moving all images into subfolders under My Pictures is to not use File>Open. Opening from the Organiser, from Windows Explorer, from image browsers like Picasa 3 directly (ie right click and Open With) are alternatives. I tend to do that a lot now as I have a lot of images on external drives and even if you put them in My Pictures on an EHD, File Open will default to a list view. It's only My Pictures on a main drive that is "special"

Another alternative that may be more extreme than you want is to set the thumbnail view as your default folder view. To do this, have your current view in Windows Explorer set to thumbnails. Then, go up to the Tools pull-down menu and select Folder Options. Then select the View tab. There you have two options...set ALL folder views to your current view (which would be thumbnails).

Hi Philip,

I'm glad it worked. That's how I have my images organized. I wish it worked for the "Shared Pictures" as well.
