I am trying to burn a DVD from an .avi file with Premiere Elements 2.0. When I bring the file into 2.0, there is no video, just audio. I've tried this with several .avi files I have on my computer and get the same results. I un-installed Elements 4.0 a week or so ago because I now have Elements 6. I was wondering if that un-install affected Premiere Elements 2.0? And should I re-install Elements 4 to get back the functionality of Premiere Elements 2.0? I've not had this problem before.

Before you do anything else, go to the program files for Premiere Elements 2
(Program Files/Adobe/Premiere Elements 2/Tutorial). You will find several sample .avi files there. Take one or more into Premiere Elements 2 and see/hear if you have video/audio for them.

Let me know how that turns out, and then we move on from there. If they playback fine, then you should give me a lot details on these problem .avi files and tell me where these problem .avi are saved (ex. external hard drive/NTFS or FAT32, other).

The test .avi files from the tutorial you mentioned play just fine, so it must be my .avi files. They are stored on my hard drive (C drive) under "My DVDs".

If you click on one of these problem avi files in its saved location and you Open With Windows Media Player, do you get both playback with video and audio?

How are you getting these problem avi files into Premiere Elements 2, via Get Media?

Refresh my memory, where are these .avi files coming from? Are they DV AVI or some other format that has an .avi extension?

To be continued...........

The .avi files will play in a free program I downloaded from the internet. It is VLC media player. The .avi files are on my hard drive (C drive) in a folder I call "My DVDs". When I try to open it in Windows Media Player, it only plays the audio. The same with Quick Time.

I am getting these .avi files into Premiere 2 by clicking "get media".

All I know is the extension is .avi. They are movies my daughter made, saved them to a DVD with the .avi extension and I uploaded them from the DVD to my hard drive.

The best way is to know the camera or camcorder that these .avi files came from. There are a lot of types of .avi. AVI is a wrapper and can content different comparison standard, ex. DV AVI, AVI MPEG4, AVI Motion JPEG, etc.

Do you have Windows Movie Maker on your computer? You could try converting your .avi to DV AVI with Windows Movie Maker and then bringing the DV AVI version into Premiere Elements.

Take a look at the following link for just the how to parts.

I guess the problem is that I don't have the correct codec on my computer, and furthermore, I don't even know what that is, or what the correct one would be, or where to get it. I tried importing the .avi file into Movie Maker and that was the message I got. In "options", I had to select "download codec". Then this was the message I got:

".avi cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again."

I will think about this more tomorrow.

But, here is some info on "codec"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codec

There is a software called GSpot that helps identify missing codec. I have never used it. Here are some online details:

I am wondering if MPEG Streamclip would convert your .avi to DV AVI?

To be continued in the New Year. Best wishes for a Happy New Year.

Back sooner than I thought, but just with an edit....

In earlier post, you will see me mention "comparison standard..." That should be compression standard...
