I tried a "Pulled Pixel" tutorial I found in Adobe Studio Exchange. It was easy and fun and results in a really unique background. Go to Adobe Studio Exchange and search on "AMR Pixel Pulling" to find it. I used it on a photo I took of one of my sunflower bouquets.

Diana, what a neat idea! And so quick and easy I had to try it out.
Great idea for simple backgrounds! (or blankets maybe)

LOL--does kind of look like a blanket, doesn't it. Great job on the background!

Oh, this is fun, Diana! Here's mine. I did a shear effect and a motion blur on the background after "pulling" it, just for fun.

Linda--That's a new twist on it I wouldn't have thought of. They say two (or many) heads are better than one! Thanks.

Took me a while to figure out that you need to use the rectangular marquee tool and set it to fixed aspect ratio at 1 pixel by several hundred.
Kept looking for the column marquee that doesn't exist in PSE3 or 4 that I can find.
Once you've done this, play with distortion filters... here's a garbage image... Lot's of options...

Hi,
Couldn't get it to work until I read Brice's post about fixed aspect selection.
Here is my attempt, so easy and so effective.
Kev:) :)

Thanks Diana!
I love your flowers, so colourful, and yet Kev has shown that it also works well with more neutral colours.
So easy to do, I tried it out very quickly. I would never have known to change to fixed aspect ratio but for Brice - how did you even know what to do?

Hi Bayla,
I created that background using the pulled pixel tutorial quite some time ago, but as I remember it, I followed the tutorial exactly and it worked out fine, don't recall using fixed aspect ratio.
The original sunflower image coloration I did for a class I took from Janee at lvsonline.com. Then when I saw the pulled pixel tutorial I decided to use it on that image since it was so colorful. Glad you like it.

Incrediable how much a simple effect can make all the diffence.
That is why I created the tutorial "Pixel Pulling".
Also cause I love the effect and would have to call it one of my all time favs.
Try this effect.
Use the pixel pull effect, then motion blur the effect on several different angles. Keep in mind, do the motion blurrs on seperate layers. One done, overlay the blurred layers for very Kool effect.
Enjoy...

Anna, I can't find it either but I have a hard copy.
PULLED PIXEL EFFECT
1 get the rectangular marquee
make a vertical selection of your image (make it very narrow 1 pixel or thereabout)
edit > copy
edit > paste (call this layer pixel)
then use the move tool to pull out the "pixel layer" until it covers your screen
make sure there is 0 feather!! that has caught me a couple of times
Hope this helps :)
