I'm very confused and frustrated.
I have pre7 installed on two computers.
On my original system pre7 kept giving me an error message when trying to import video from my canon sd870 point and shoot camera. It would say "this type of file is not supported, or the required codec is not installed"

After getting really frustrated, I ended up shutting down pre7 and loaded it back up and tried again and everything worked without a problem.

I now have a new computer. The videos from my canon sd870 work fine on both systems now.

I also have a canon 5d mark II and am playing around with some HD video that I shot. On my old system running pre7, the videos import fine. On the new system, I get the above error message.

I'm really frustrated. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is there some codec that I need to install??

I saw your comment on this matter over in BlackMICA's thread where he is using the same Canon. We are looking forward to his comments.

Please check out my response to your question in that thread where I wondered if you had forgotten to install the latest version of QuickTime in your new computer.

If that is not it, to be continued.........

ATR - that made perfect sense and I appreciate the suggestion. It was a new system and I doubt quicktime was on it. However, I just installed q7 and I'm still getting the same error.
Are there any reports of certain media types having issues on vista 64 bit vs. 32 bit? my old is 32 and the new is 64.

I will do some homework on that.

Windows Vista 64 bit should permit use of 32 bit applications, but it runs these 32 bit applications in a 32 bit compatibility mode. Premiere Elements 7 is 32 bit software.

Check out the following from the Premiere Elements User to User Forum at Adobe. I got involved in one of these links on that topic:

I will be back later with more information.

Still thinking, but while doing so wonder about a QuickTime64 vs QuickTime32 on a Vista 64 operating system. Which QuickTime did you download?

Check out this thread link to see if any of it sounds worthwhile

ATR,
In an interesting twist, I decided to try a different video clip and it imported just fine. When I copied the non-working video clip from the old system to the new, the one video clip must have gotten corrupted during the copy because everything appears to be working now after recopying the original.
Thanks again for your help!

That is absolutely great news.

So, have you done anything else different since we spoke last? Can we safely assume that installation of the QuickTime software solved the issue?

Sometimes it is frustrating/difficult to pin point cause/effect. Last night the Drive via its Drive Manager for my external hard drive decided to "hide". It has been operating without problems since its installation several months ago. All of a sudden, I was stuck with "No Drive Present" when there was one. After troubleshooting away for several hours, I discovered that the Drive Manager file was opening in the wrong program. Usually, uninstall/reinstall is the order of the day, but in this case "repair" of the .exe got things back to normal. So, strange things do happen. It is always good to know the whys if available. But, often we are left just being thankful that the problem was solved.

Continued success.

Yeah, I'm guessing the qt install fixed the problem. However, I only tried the one damaged video clip BEFORE the qt install so it's tough to say if that fixed it.
However, I'm guessing that since it needs qt, it wouldn't have worked until that install happened.
Anyway, thanks again for your time. You and this forum are quite valuable and I'm guessing I will be visiting a lot in the near future as I further explore PRE.
