what i am trying to accomplish:
i want to make a signature for one of my gaming forums.
i want it to just have my name, but with no background.
that way it will look the same regardless of how people have their forum background color set.

what i did:
file > new > blank file > set background contents to "transparent"

results:
after saving, it always comes out with a white background.

any suggestions?

Zak, the way I understand it, is, if you save as a jpg it will have a white background. Saved as a psd or tiff will be saved as transparent...Bill

I think the best bet is to save your signature as a .png file, this is more universally accepted than either .psd or .tiff.

A gif will work, too.

If you're saving an image with a transparent background for use on the web, your best bet is to save it in GIF format using File > Save For Web. In the save for web dialog, select GIF as the format, then check the box for Transparency, set the size and any other options you desire before clicking Save.
