Happy Holidays to me :) On the recommendation of a very good friend I got the canon xsi and now I am so excited and scared beyond belief at this camera! I've been an avid digital scrapper for years and I finally decided that my pages are only as good as the pictures.
I've never had anything more than a little point and shoot so this is a big step. I've already got the training video and the book that was recommended on another thread now all I need is the patience to go along with it!!
Here's to a great new year with lots to learn :)

I got my Canon Xsi last week, and I'm every bit as excited as Candy. I haven't had much chance to get out with it because we've had several heavy snowfalls lately, but I'm already impressed. I got the 18-200 mm lens and a macro 100/2.8 lens. Based on photos I've taken around the house, I think I'm really going to enjoy using the macro. Can't wait for the weather to improve so that I can get outside and see what the 18-200 lens can do.
Enjoy your new camera, Candy!

I know how you feel, Candy. I had a couple P&S's before I bought my XTi and was totally intimidated by it at first. I used it on auto for almost a year while I read books and internet articles and then started using it on P mode. P mode is pretty much automatic, only lets you customize White Balance, ISO, a few other options and decide to use the flash or not, manually.
This book should be really helpful. I have the XTi version of the book and also the interactive CD.

The thing that really helped me the most was taking an 8 week photography course through a school adult enrichment program. The instructor said his goal was to show us how to control our camera rather than let the camera control us. The hands-on exercises in the class and scenarios he gave us to decide which shutter speeds, apertures & ISOs to use for specific situations was what really started to make everything click for me.
Good luck and happy shooting with your new camera.

Congratulations, Candy. Just start out using auto until you get comfortable with the camera and its modes.
Try bracketing your difficult exposures so that you gat a hang of how lighting works.
Post back with any question you may have, expert advice is waiting in the wings.

Congrads also . I just got my mine 3 days ago and can't take enough photos. Love it so far. The pictures I've taken are great. Like you I can't wait to learn how to use all of it.

Congrats on your new Camera!!
I can see this question coming. Yes, your new Cameras has a wonderful very high tech computer Sensor and will be able to shoot a lot of things on Automatic. Its good, very good actually but because its a puter its also not able to see what exactly your seeing.
The camera can only see what the programmers put inside of it. As the operator and Photographer you have the responsability to take control of this tool so it can be used to create.
Start shooting on Auto and get a feel of what the camera can do. What the exposure is, why is it set this way. Now, you can look at every thing around you including and especailly the now bad weather outside. Since when does bad weather effect our image taking? Only when you don't want a brand new high tech computer camera to NOT get wet...... Use an umbrella...........

Very good sound info from above post. Also exp. bracketing very cool also. Enjoy and shoot alot, I have had my XSI for about 6 mos or so.
There are a few good books out there to use for operation, the owners manual is a little scary. Looking forward to see some pics.........

thank you all for your great comments, looks like I am going to learn so much!! I am making some time for myself this weekend to just go out and shoot! My kids are tired already of me taking the camera out! I am definetly going to look into the adult school classes that is a great Idea I love the dvd I got and the book but I learn better when I can see it in action and then do it so hopefully I can find a class around me
thanks again to everyone :) I'm an avid digital scrapper so you may not see just my photos but my pages posted :)
