Is there any way to change the shape of the selection you have made with the elliptical selection tool without just dragging it over and over and over trying to get what you want?

You can subtract from the selection by holding down the Alt key and removing what you don't want, or add to it by holding down the Shift key and adding in what you do want or you can transform the selection (Ctrl-T)

(I also prefer having the grid on so that I can see exactly where the original selection is going to be.)

There sure is. Grant's Tools, Graffi's add-ons, Elements Plus all have the transform selection action that lets you transform any selection shape including the elliptical marquee. Ctrl-T won't do it unless you want to transform the selected image and not just the selection.

Actually I'm not sure why I typed Ctrl-T seeing as I was just trying it out using Transform Selection with Grant's Tools!!:o

Absent Grant's Tools, the key to transforming the selection (Elliptical Marquee or any other selection for that matter) is to do the transforming on a layer mask layer, e.g., Levels Adjustment Layer.

Open your image.
Create a new Levels Adjustment Layer.
On the image layer (below the adjustment layer) drag out the selection marquee tool to the approximate shape.
Now switch to the Levels Layer, and then >Image>Transform, and make whatever adjustments to the selection you want, including rotating, etc.
Commit the Selection (check mark), and then delete the Adjustment Layer.

Jeff, this worked great. I'll keep that on file. Thanks.

Tony, I guess I forgot to get Grant's Tools when I got PE6 but I probably wouldn't have thought of it anyway. I'll get it now and thanks for your suggestion.

Thanks everyone for your help. I'm back in business now.
