I have a frame (in grayscale) which has white snowflakes with various levels of transparency around the edge. I converted to rgb and want to color it red (or green) while maintaining the same various transparencies. When I try to replace the white (using Enhance/adjust color/replace color) with red ... I get gray . Is there another step that I'm missing or is this just not possible since the image started as a greyscale image?

Gary, duplicate the background (phtot) and desaturate it. Change the mode to Color.
Now choose your color and begin to paint.

Hi Gary ...

... and welcome to the Village :)

Are you trying to change the colour of the white snowflakes if you are then Enhance>adjust color>replace color won't work. Try Hue & Saturation and turn down the lightness first.

As white has no colour then its difficult to recolour ... turning down the lightness changes it to grey and you can recolour that :)
