Hi Everyone.

First off let me wish everyone a Happy and Safe Holiday Season. Ok, now down to business. I bought the Premiere Elements 7 a couple of weeks ago. I just am finishing up my video. I went to share to burn a DVD so I can view it and make any changes. It comes up with Media not found.
I tried using a DVD-RW 4X 4.7 GB and also tried using DVD+R 4.7 up to 16x and it still comes up with Media not found. What am I doing wrong? I am trying to make some Christmas gifts and it's not working.. Just what I need more STRESS........ for the holiday season. LOL I'm not really stressing yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated....:)

Thanks,
Hockeymom

Hi Mom :)
In many cases the communication between the DVD Burner and the software causes this problem. The next possibility would be the DVDs themselves but considering you already tried two different discs that is unlikely.

So on to the communication problem, the DVD burner has what is called Firmware. The Firmware is what the computer and the device use to communicate. In many cases outdated firmware will not work with new applications.

There should be a firmware update available for your burner and you should be able to find it either on the computer manufacturer's website or the DVD manufacturer's website. The best place to look is the computer site first, such as Dell or HP.

If you can provide some additional information we can help you get the correct update for your DVD Drive Firmware.
What computer do you have and what DVD Burner is installed?

Window Vista Home Premium with SP1

Thanks Again,

I checked the Gateway support site for a DVD Drive Firmware update but could not find one, lots of other updates available for that machine though.

Problem is that by the time the computer is actually sold most of the drivers and firmware are out of date. Especially with Vista machines as they are still developing drivers and firmware for Vista devices.

We really need to find out the manufacturer of the DVD Drive so we can check their website as well. Open My Computer and right click on the DVD Drive and select Properties. Then look on the Hardware tab and see if that tells you the make and model. If not there are other places we can look as well.

Hi Hockeymom,

I see that you and CE have a plan of action in progress. I will watch your progress.

Forgive me in advance, but I just have to ask...how many DVD burners do you have in your computer? If more than one, in the burn dialog area, did you designate the DVD burner into which you inserted the DVD disc??

I have two DVD burners installed. Both work great. But, from time to time, especially when I am in a hurry, I will forget to look in the burner location place and change the location to the burner that I am using. Voila, the No Media Present message.

Please let us know if that is a possibility. If not, I will think about this some more.

If the current plan does not work, do you have Nero software (with its Nero Vision Application with DVD plugin) or some software for burning (Burn Images) a VIDEO_TS folder to a DVD disc. We could talk about getting you through the crisis with Burn to Folder and then follow up with the Burn to Disc after the crunch time is over.

Major Edit....

I got carried away with my typing. Leave in the Nero (Burn Images) for the VIDEO_TS, but definitely omit the Nero Vision (DVD Plugin) inclusion. Goof.

Nancy,

I forgot to ask an alternative question. OK, you are in the burn dialog of Premiere Elements 7, you have your DVD disc inserted into the drive tray, but you see the No Media Present message:

1. What happens if you hit the "Rescan" button in that dialog? Message still there?

Hi Chuck and ATR,

I went on a live chat with Gateway to see if they could give me the name of the manufacturer for the DVD Burner. When I followed your steps Chuck it came up with..

Manufacturer (standard disk drive). I knew that wouldn't help so I went to Gateway. They told me they couldn't tell me the name. I did do a test and made a quick DVD off of the windows media to make sure the burner was working and it is.

ATR I only have the one DVD Burner in this computer. I do not have Nero. My son is standing behind me and he check and said we do not have a program to burn DVD. I thought the computer would of came with one. I still have my old computer hooked up and we checked that computer and we had CyberLink DVD Suite. HMMMMM.... Maybe that is my problem...

Hockeymom,

You definitely should have "Windows DVD Maker" that comes along with Vista Home Premium.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/features/dvd-maker.aspx

Where did you create your slideshow, Photoshop Elements 7 or solely in Premiere Elements 7?
1. If Photoshop Elements 7, then output/save as .wmv and burn that .wmv to DVD-VIDEO (sometimes called publishing DVD) through Vista's Photo Gallery/Window DVD Maker.
2. If Premiere Elements 7, then export from Timeline as DV AVI (File Menu/Export/Movie, using default settings) and burn that DV AVI to DVD-VIDEO through Vista's Photo Gallery/Windows DVD Maker.

If you absolutely cannot find Windows DVD Maker and/or the Photo Gallery with a link to a Windows DVD Maker, then call the person who sold you the computer to find out why you do not have the Windows DVD Maker.

All that does not supply an answer for why you cannot go the direct route from Premiere Elements 7. We all will be looking into that. The above is just suggested as a workaround to address the immediate need.

We continue to work on this.

Here is a link to the Gateway support site that shows all of the available updates for the DX4720
http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/search.asp?ref=step&st=browse&platform=10021&model=12085&os=10954&type=
There are many updates but none showing for the DVD burner.

I would contact them again and ask them if there is a firmware update for your DVD burner. There is no reason why they shouldn't be able to tell you what make and model DVD burner is in your system. One of the reasons I like Dell so much better :)

Do you think that NEC and/or Sony/NEC merge could be the manufacturer of that Gateway DVD burner?

http://news.softpedia.com/news/NEC-Labelflash-DVD-Burners-14180.shtml

http://news.softpedia.com/news/Sony-merges-its-optical-drive-business-with-Nec-12665.shtml

Hockeymom,

I did not realize until I started researching your computer that you have a Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit, not 32 bit. You talked about your old computer. What was the operating system on that? Most of these 64 bit systems, let you run 32 bit software in the 32 bit compatibility mode. But, that is for another time.........

I am researching away, especially its Multi Media Power claims... to be continued....

CE,

It looks like "Optiarc" may be the name of the Sony/NEC merge.

Without opening up the unit it would be hard to tell. Might be a clue in Device Manager or by running DXDIAG from Start/Run. I'm very surprised that Gateway would not tell what the make and model were.

The simple fact might be that the drive is not compatible with Premiere Elements, that is a possibility especially with Vista. New firmware and drivers are coming out all the time for Vista machines and devices, they will catch up eventually.

Sometimes I just wish I could drop by and take a look at the problem first hand :)

Is the following your computer, Gateway DX4720-03?
http://www.gateway.com/systems/product/529668198.php

I just want to make sure that I am focused on the right computer. I think that you listed it as "DX-47020-03". Most of the drivers listed previously by CE look like they are for Vista 32 bit, not 64 bit. By the way, have you tried using the personalized driver search at that Gateway site?

Just some thoughts until we come up with something.

I think the best option might be to burn to a folder like you suggested ATR, then use other software to actually burn the DVD. 64 bit machines do not get the attention that 32 bit machines get as far as driver and firmware updates go, this could be a problem.

I didn't think you could get Vista Home Premium in a 64 bit version?

ATR

CE

I am not much on 64 bit systems, so I am depending on that Gateway link that I found which says that it is offering Window Vista Home Premium SP1 64 bit in that Gateway DX-4720-03.

I agree that, to get pass the immediate need, Premiere Elements 7 burn to folder should be the path of least resistance. But, we need to get Hockeymom, a software that will burn the VIDEO_TS of the saved folder to DVD-VIDEO. That is why I am hoping that a Windows DVD Maker or an appropriate counter part is in her DX-4720-03 somewhere.

I am trying to find out if the Windows DVD Maker is supposed to be integrated into Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit as well as into 32 bit.

To be continued..........

Hi Chuck and ATR,

Just wanted to let you know I haven't had time to try your suggestions yet. My in-laws came in from FL., plus I have been sick and running back and forth to the doctors. I will be trying your suggestions sometime this weekend. I didn't want you to think you gave me all of this for nothing.

Thanks again and have a great weekend,

Hi Chuck and ATR,

My computer is a DX4720 I had a typing error when I mention it the first time. Boy this is some project just to get a DVD to burn. My old computer was a gateway and it was a 32 bit. I didn't realize what a problem I would have buying a new computer. Well I'm feeling better Thank You and I will read over everything and see what I can do. My husband will be home this weekend so I can have him read all of this and try and help me also. I will definitely keep you both updated. I really appreciate all you have been doing for me. :)

Chuck and ATR,

I just read everything over and I decided to try from scratch because I read ATR's comment about the rescan button in the dialog. I put the DVD in and hit burn and it started to burn. I will let you know if it burned OK. Thanks a million for all of your help. I did burn a DVD on the windows Maker. A short quick one. Maybe that did something.

I got detoured yesterday and am trying to catch up.

We are looking forward to your results. Did you ever find that Windows DVD Maker that usually comes with Vista Home Premium Edition? From what you wrote, it sounds like you did. If necessary, we could go into that 64 bit vs 32 bit business, but, for now, it sounds like you have made progress, and success is right around the corner, if not there already.

(Hope you are feeling better. We continue to watch for an additional postings when you are ready. It is now 7 am where I am and need to face the issue of snow removal from last night's storm.)

ATR and Chuck,

Just wanted to give you an update. I finally got the DVD to burn. Just doing some fine touches now and I am waiting for a CD I ordered to come so I can finish with the music. ATR I did use the rescan button a few time and it did work. It came up a few times not ready and when I use the rescan button it corrected it. I can't thank you both enough for getting me through this.

I am giving a copy of the DVD's to my Brothers and Sisters for Christmas. I will let you know how they liked it.
ATR, I hope you are not to sore from shoveling. I did my share of it. It looks like more is on the way.

If I don't come back on before Christmas, I just want to wish you both A Very Merry Christmas. Have a happy, healthy and a safe one.

As for snow....snow removed yesterday, found more snow this morning, back out there in a few hours to get in more winter exercise.

Happy Holidays.

Just wanted to let the both of you know that the DVD I made was a big hit. I didn't have them all done for Christmas, because my computer shut down on me and I lost the whole file. I did have one copy burned already, so I just had to copy the stuff off of that one. I am not finishing up with it. Thanks again for all of your help Chuck and ATR.

Have a Very Happy New Years,

Glad to hear that your video was well received. I like the way you found a way to achieve your goal in spite of your computer shutdown. Learning principles, of course, is important. But knowing how to overcome what looks like a disaster is the key to success. You found the key.
