Burn tool lock-up

hey guys
i was working on a piece over the weekend (well, its a recurring issue)
and noticed that it wouldnt let me burn highlights or shadows, only midtones. the opacity of the burn was shown greyed out but was still working when i clicked.

the dodge tool worked perfectly.

i tried the "reset tool" on the left hand side of that bar but to no avail.

any help appreciated.

Have you tried resetting the Preferences by holding down Shift+Ctrl+Alt while starting up PSE?
