View Full Version : Catalog diatribe v6 to v7

On 12/8 I installed PSE 7, without uninstalling v6.

I converted my catalog: "Current Catalog" and v7 opened it without any diffictulty. :)

While in v7 I added some images, and tagged them.

Today my camera opened v6 and I imported the images on it. I added tags then close 6 and opened 7. I thought the images would appear, but they didn't.

Why? Do I need to close 6 before I open 7? Does it have something do to with where the catalog is?

In v6 my catalog is in a "custom Location" on E:\...My catalog.

In v7, if I opt for "Custom Location" and enter that path, no catalog is listed in the box below.

The odd thing is that when I take that path to the the location I can't find any current files.

In v6 I tried changing the "Current catalog" name to "December08" but a folder with that name was created.

When in v7 no catalogs are listed when I opt for Custom Location; were I thought the newly named "December08" catalog would be.

I've also discovered a huge collection of image files, ALL dated 3/5/06, in the "PSE photos/Catalogs" folder. Should they be there?

Actually this (http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1Ogjjer9ojohnskMtXbUzGzFGr9Sc) may be easier to see:

While in v7 I "got" them and taged them, so I can "Move" them to appropriate folders later.

They came in with there own set of "imported tags". I need to review them; they may be "lost" images or are they copies? I'm note sure how they got there. Where they put there by the catalog system or did I just, somehow, put them there before I knew what I was doing; back when I was using v4?

Can I "move" them to another folder without disturbing the catalog?

What a mess! :( What is the simplest way to clean it up; without corrupting my current catalog.

btw when I renamed the catalog in v4; which is located in a "custom folder" how do I find that catalog when I'm in v7? I still see "Current Catalog" in v7

Your PSE6 catalog and your PSE7 catalog are distinct and separate entities. One does not know anything about the other. Importing a photo into one catalog does not import it into the other catalog.

It has nothing to do with the catalog location. It has nothing to do with the catalog name.

Regarding your "missing files" that you are showing in the attached screen shot, I would recommend you just leave them where they are. They appear to be something needed for your catalog to work properly. I'll take your word that you found files that are "ALL dated 3/5/06", but that's not what is shown in the image you provide. So, when you ask "should they be there", I would say "Yes", you must have put them there.

The easiest way to fix this is to only use one catalog. Once you decide which catalog to use, you should probably import the photos that are not in that particular catalog into the catalog.

Also ... never move photos in Windows. Only use PSE commands to move your files. That's a very strong word "never" that I used. And its exactly what you should do -- never move files in Windows.

And make sure that the PSE6 downloader is disabled if you decide to use the PSE7 catalog as your main catalog. And vice versa.

What are you doing by naming a catalog December08? Are you creating individual catalogs for each month? That would defeat the purpose of having a catalog in the first place.

Thanks for responding to my question. Sorry for my delayed response; I missed the e-mail I got telling me of it :o

Ah, now it makes sense.

Opps, your correct, the dates are different; but that was the wrong folder :(

This (http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1fHcY4CjWOQkUYn7idPhyku7bjZh)is the correct folder with all these (http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1BGIIdT42mDtW1GugKMi0NTkPluhPe) files. These are dated the same. I haven't moved them, but I wonder why this folder has this HUGE collection of images.

When I installed v7 I converted the catalog in v6. So all the images are loading when I open v7. I guess the thing to do now is to prevent v6 from opening by default; when I plug my camera in. Not sure how to do that; except to change the exe filename of uninstall v6. Is there any downside to just uninstalling v6?

That I DO understand :D ! I always move my image files within PSE

Ah, yes. But how do I do that? Like I said; maybe I should just uninstall v6

No, I was just creating a name I could search for. I only have two catalogs: one of all the images I took while in vacation in France and the other for everything else.

This is the result of a backup operation that you mistakenly did to your hard disk. (Unless you name your photos B000001.jpg, etc.) Pretty sure you can delete these.

To disable the PSE6 downloader, you can do either:

Uninstall PSE6 (and if you are committing to use PSE7, and your catalog has converted probably, I see no reason to keep PSE6 installed)
Disable the PSE6 downloader ... not sure cause I don't have PSE6, but most likely you can do so in Organizer Preferences.

Of course, you would also need to make sure that your PSE7 downloader is turned on and working properly.

Ah, of course! Now it makes sense! Great, now I can clear these out; since all my backups have done correctly since

Great, I'll do that. I know my catalog is set up because I've been working in v7

Disable the PSE6 downloader ... not sure cause I don't have PSE6,
No problem, I just activated the installer in v7 and got it working. All I have to do now is uninstall v6

Thanks so much for your help :D
