Many thanks to ATR for pointing out that great feature. Several times I've retrieved a carefully saved (I thought) project only to find that some key media pieces were gone when I went to retrieve it.

With Project Archiver it not only safely stores the project files, it also stores all the media used in the project. Thank you ATR!

That Project Archiver in Premiere Elements is really a great feature. Which of the two options did you try, Archiver or Copy?

If I recall, the Archiver (also referred to as Trimmed) will save your project (.prel) along with the Media that was used on the Timeline. In contrast, the Copy option lets you save the project (.prel) along with all the Media that was brought into the Media Panel as well as the Media that was used on the Timeline.

I do not recall ever seeing this feature in a Photoshop Elements version. I am not much of an Organizer user, so I am not up to date on how people are archiving their .psd files from there and not getting into Reconnect problems if they move source files from their original locations. Backing up a catalog would not seem to apply here. Maybe I have not thought about this enough. I will check it out to determine if there is answer right in front of me and my thinking has been frozen by this cold weather where I am.

To be continued............

I have Premiere Elements 4 and it's under File > Project Archive. I use the trimmed version because I figure I don't need to save something if I didn't actually use it in the timeline. I'm tired of going in to improve something in a video and finding that even though I saved the finished video, I've lost some of the media files it was made from. Ha, no more!

I just found this in the Adobe Forums:

WARNING: project archiver "take all" and subclips

Paul McGee (http://www.adobeforums.com/webx?224@@2cd35f49@.3bc34824) - 10:03am Feb 28, 2007 Pacific

The "take all material" option of the project archiver is not at all suitable for projects with actual subclips with original master source present.

Please note that this is only about actual subclips which were created by going from source clip to the monitor and back to the media bin as a subclip. Do not confuse this with trimming clips on the timeline; totally different beast.

The ENTIRE ORIGINAL SOURCE for every subclip is copied -- for every subclip that is derived from it.

Thus is there is 10 GB clip that has had 50 true subclips made from it nad placed in the media bin that 10 GB original source will be copied 50 times, (1) taking many hours and (2) taking 500 GB of disk space.

Thanks for the feedback and bringing this issue forward.

When Paul talked about the "take all material option", I am assuming that he is referring to the "Copy" option of the Project Archiver. To repeat, this option will save the project (.prel) as well as all the Media in the Media Panel and all the Media that was used on the Timeline.

When you are trimming your clip, for example, in the Timeline Preview Window (IN/OUT points), you can drag your trimmed clip to the Timeline for use on the Timeline. BUT, it will not be saved media. To save a trimmed clip (make a subclip), you drag from Preview Window to Media Panel (you are in Project/Media view). That subclip becomes true media. So, it should not have come as such a surprise to Paul when he found these subclips saved when using the Project Archiver, Copy option.

This saving trimmed clips as subclips in done in the Preview Window while you are in Project View/Media. This is an important concept, so, if there are any questions about this, please let me know so that I can try to clarify the details further.

Can somebody post a link to the original post so I can read what the issue is and determine if it is applicable to what I'm doing.
Thanks

This moment I cannot put my hands on one specific thread the was related to happydog's comments about Premiere Elements' Project Archiver feature. There are many threads which address that feature to be found in the Search here. Re-reading this specific thread will give you a lot of the core details. Here is one previous thread that I thought that you might find interesting:

http://www.elementsvillage.com/forums/showthread.php?t=38301&highlight=Project+Archiver

But best, read up on the Project Archiver in the program's Help. The whole issue goes to saving your Premiere Elements project (.prel) and not getting into reconnect problems when you re-open the project and the project's source files are unlinked because you have moved/deleted them from your computer after you created the project.

If I recall, the sample thread cited above got started re: transferring projects from computer to computer. All sorts of variations of the theme.

Once you understand the function of the Project Archiver with its Archiver and Copy options, then you can decide if you need it for a specific situation.

Please let us know if you need for us to fill in any gaps on how to deal with the "Trimmed" or "Copy" folder that is generated and saved to a location of your choice in the process.
