View Full Version : How do you protect the LCD on your camera?

Hi everyone,

I've been using those plastic overlay sheets that are cut to fit the LCD. I hate them. They bubble, peel off, and in the long-run, they are not cost-effective.

I heard about acrylic shields, that attach themselves to the camera with sticky strips. Supposedly, they are scratch-resistant, inexpensive, and do not interfere with the viewing of the LCD. I found them here (http://www.daproducts.com/).

I'd appreciate your input and recommendations on this. Thanks in advance!

EDIT: This question pertains to DSLR cameras. In my P&S, I use a Delkin pop-up shade.

Adorama carries one, but unfortunately there is no description provided. You could try calling them. You can find that one here (http://www.adorama.com/CZCADRXSI.html).

B&H carries this one (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/457868-REG/Shield_Zone_GDC30_invisibleSHIELD_LCD_Display_Shie ld.html#features), but its one of those peel & stick types. It does have a lifetime warranty!

B&H also has a snap-on Delkin brand (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/585510-REG/Delkin_Devices_DC450D_P_eFilm_Digital_SLR_Pro.html ) shade that has a clear plastic cover for over the LCD screen. It's a bit pricey though.

Hope this helps! :D

I don't bother with my Nikon D80 as it has an acrylic shield that came with the camera and works fine - and my camera doesn't get a lot of abuse. But for my GPS that does, I use Invisible Shield. Tried several others and they were nothing like as good. Goes on easily, no bubbling, last forever and guarranteed for life. Highly recommend them:

maybe I've gone overboard, but I bought the 'Camera Armour' for my Sony and it included not only a hard plastic LCD protecter but also a rubber lens hood along with the protective rubber cover for the camera body.

LCD protector has not to date caused me any concerns and I am sure that the camera would have experienced a few scratches or scrapes without the armour.

I've never used one. Only one of my cameras has any substantial scratching of the LCD, and that's my original Canon G2. All the others have been kept in cases/bags and treated with TLC. They're pretty rugged, in my experience.

I guess if I were going to subject them to sandstorms, rain, mud, pestilence, etc., I might need a cover. I'll admit it, though - I'm a fair-weather photographer. :)

Thank you all for your input and recommendations! You're all so helpful!

I have a Delkin pop-up shade on my Canon A720is, and I love it, but I think I'll go with something like the Invisible Shield for the DSLR, because I already purchased the Hoodman Hoodloupe for it, thus solving the problem of seeing the LCD in bright light; now all I need is something to protect the LCD from scratches, etc.

Sepiana,

I've been using a Hoodman Flip-up Cap (http://www.hoodmanusa.com/departments.asp?dept=1028) on my Canon dSLR since I bought it. It attaches by sliding on to the eye piece and is easy to slide on and off. When I fell and dropped my camera two years ago, it took the full brunt of the damage and my camera came through unscathed.

Same as some of the Chuck and Tony - never used one.

I use the Delkin pop up, which I discovered after I bought and put it on, you can easily pop it off, if you want to.
Very convient for me, and I picked it up at the Wal mart, not far from the house.

Bayla, Colin, and Joe,

Thanks for your input and recommendations! Why is it so easy to select a camera, but so hard to accessorize it?;)

Sepiana,

I also used the peel & stick in the beginning, and I hated how they bubbled up. I then found THIS (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001EHAVMA) on Amazon. Sadly, the next day after I ordered mine, they were out of stock (Yes I did get mine)
I have wanted to share this with you, but with them being out of stock.........

There are other sizes on Amazon for many more cameras.

It really is a great item! Hopefully they will get more in soon.

Hi Charles, this is such a coincidence. A long time ago, in one of my searches, I came across this gadget, but I didn't bookmark it. Since then, I've searched and searched for it to no avail -- I couldn't even remember the name of the manufacturer (only that it was an Italian name).:o

Thanks anyway! [deep sigh]

Sepiana,

I just did a Google search for the Giottos Protector Screen and came up with THIS (http://www.giottos.com/SP.htm). This page shows many (but not all) of the LCD Protector screens they make. I did not find any 'Contact Us' links on that page.

Then I went to THIS (http://www.giottos.com/) page and I did find a 'Contact Us' Link. Perhaps you could contact them and ask when they will be making more. With the XSi being a brand new camera, I can't believe they would not be making more. I am surprised Amazon has been out of stock this long!

Good Luck! It really is a great product!

This didn't help me much. First, I needed a retailer; second, a check of the HPMC website didn't produce this item. So, I did some more research and found it at ADORAMA (http://www.adorama.com/GTSP8306.html?searchinfo=SP%208306&item_no=4).

Sepiana,

They gave you a bit of a run-around, but you were good with your research! I am glad you found it.
Are you going to (or have you) ordered it yet? I really like mine!

My cameras get heavy use and somehow I have managed not to scratch the screen. I shoot Canon and they have replacement screens that can be self installed for about $15. I guess I would go that route if I damaged an lcd screen as all of the plastic covers I have seen add some form of distortion. I don't know if Nikon or other brands have replacement screens.

lowbone,

I was not aware the LCD screens on Canon cameras could be replaced by the user. That would be nice.

The LCD screen I gave a link to, and that Sepiana found at Adorama is not a plastic screen.

This is the Giottos description:
Giottos Aegis 67.51 x 51mm Professional Glass LCD Screen Protector for Canon EOS Rebel XSi, 12 Layers of Multi-Coatings Each Side.

Notice the description says GLASS :) There is absolutely no distortion on my LCD screen using this product. I love it!

Merry Christmas! :D
