Resize/resample

Can you resize just a layer, or does it resize the whole thing canvas and all? I was just wondering because when I tried to do it on a layer, it popped up the dimensions of my canvas.

I want to increase the size/ resolution or whatever it takes to increase the size of a layer, without it getting pixelated.

To resize the content of a layer, first select it in the layers palette. Then click on Image / Transform / Free Transform (or Command - T on the Mac, Control - T on Windows). You then click and drag one of the handle (corners or sides).

To maintain proportion, press the SHIFT key while dragging.

Pixelisation will occur if you enlarge the image this way by a great value. Photoshop Elements will do its best but if you enlarge too much, this undesirable effect will show up.
