Hello,

I'm trying to create blended montages. Rather than starting with an existing background photo, I need a blank about 1" x 8". I created this. I'm following the instructions in The Photoshop Elements Book for Digital Photographers, but it doesn't seem to be working.

Every time I try to switch photos, the new photo becomes the background. Nothing appears to be working as it is supposed to, specifically with the layers which are essential to this.

In the book they use a base photo, and a similar sized photo to blend together. I need to add 3, 4 or more to this wide 1x8 strip photo, one after the other. All the added photos are different sizes, and need to be reduced down to this strip photo. I don't want to use the entire photo but just cropped parts of it.

Can this be done interactively or do I need to pre-crop and size all the images in advance? Can anybody with good experience lend me some guidance here?

Each time you open a photo it's a new document.
What you want to do is make layers on your 1x8.

Open an image and make a selection, ctl>c to copy to the clipboard, then switch to your 1x8 and ctl>v to paste. That should give you a new layer on the 1x8 with the selected piece.

Open another photo and repeat the process to get another image on your 1x8. Now you should have 2 layers.
