If I upgrade from PSE 5 to PSE 6 or 7 will all of my brushes, plug ins filters etc stay with the program and remain funcitional? Are there any editing improvements for background removal in PSE 6 or 7?

Thanks,

John

When you install a new version it's not really an upgrade - it loads the new version and leaves the old version untouched. So nothing you added to PSE5 will be in PSE6/7 unless you move it. I tend to just move things as I need them (and leave the old version on my PC) as it's a good opportunity to clean out things I've used once and never again.

As for selection tool improvements for background removal the quick selection tool and refine edge are great improvements. But for good background removal of tricky subjects take a look at On One Essentials - Cut It Out does an excellent job once you get the hang of it.

Since the special effects that I have purchased for PSE 5 won't automatically transfer to PSE 7, what would be the path I should use to put them on 7? I have Windows XP.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Check out this thread and the links to Hummies videos. They explain where to put what in all versions of Elements.

Hi. My problem is similar to the one voiced above by Wildrose.
I recently purchased PSE 7 and have been going back and forth between it and PSE 3 since 3 still contains numerous free and purchased plug-ins from non-Adobe vendors.
I went to "Hummies" as suggested above, but didn't see advice on doing what I need.
I am no cyberwhiz so I need very basic instructions.
I accessed PSE3 andPSE7 via right-clicking 'Start', then clicking on 'Explore' to pull down all desktop folders. I then clicked on PSE3 and pulled down its contents. Then I did the same with PSE7. I then dragged "plug-ins" from 3 and placed it in that spot in 7. Same thing with 'Filters' and some individual plug-ins (such as Dreamsuite Dreamy Photo by AutoFx). Then I re-started my computer and opened PSE7. When I opened an image file in order to permit clicking on 'Filters' to pull down its contents, I expected the moved plug-ins which had been in that location in PSE3 to be there - as you will surmise, they were not.
In beginner's terminology and in simple step-by-step fashion, would someone kindly give me help with this dilemma. Most of my plug-ins have no disc to simplify things.
Thanks a ton in advance,
Peter

Hi Peter,

I copied all the plug-ins I had in PSE4 to PSE7. They are all showing up in the Filter menu and working properly. That's how I did it:

I went to the plug-in folder in PSE4 and copied the pertinent files; then I opened the PSE7 plug-in folder and pasted the files there. I did one plug-in at a time, opened PSE7 (to make sure everything was OK), and then proceeded to the next plug-in.

Ironicaly, having a cd for a plug-in didn't simplify things -- the only plug-in that caused problems was one I had a cd for.

Hi Peter ..

It could be that some of them will need installing as opposed to simply moving over
