The sailor with the 3 medals is a second father to me. His wife asked me if I could restore this photo of him with his submarine crew, taken inthe early 60s. I estimate it took about 25 hours--and I coudn't have done it without all I learned from PET, both the magazine and the website.

Beautiful job!! The faces of the officer back right and the sailor front middle must have been extremely difficult.

Thank you, everyone. It WAS a labor of love, as these are people who have meant a lot to me, especially when I was growing up. I'm expecting she'll get the package in the mail Monday or Tuesday. It's to be a Christmas present for him.
Those two faces were the biggest challenges, and that's where everything I've learnd from the PET magazine, web site and forum have been so helpful. For the officer's face, I selected and flipped the good side, then used the distort tool to try to edge the lips and mouth crease a bit so it wouldn't look too freakishly symmetrical. The astute observer who knows Navy insignia will note that the eagle on his hat is pointed backwards! For the sailor in the middle, I had to figure out how to draw eyes. Since I'm in the science field with no skill in drawing--for me, that was the toughest part.
I am just so glad to be able to do something special for these two wonderful people.

Terri--Thank you for the suggestion. Do you know how I'd go about doing that?
And to everyone: Papa Bunch (my second dad) was SO pleased. It triggered all these memories, and he started to talk about the photo, when and where and why it was taken, the men on the ship...He's a very special person, so it was worth every second.

Your restoration is very good. I have done some restoration in the past and I know that faces can be very hard to do and you have done a wonderful job. I think those cracked photos just give me fits and are hard.
Who ever recieves this as a gift will be so amazed at what your labor of love has done.
Thanks for showing us your talent.

That it is. It's really a good thing when two parties get so much out of a project that's really a work of love. I can relate to that having put together a digital photo frame album for my parents' 60th wedding anniversary. It was about two weeks' of hard work, working on it all my spare time, but it was worth it. They were just bowled over. They hardly dared touch the thing. :D
