View Full Version : Batch scale change ???

Hi,
In most of my projects I like to scale the frame down to 90- 95% for many clips due to the overscan on many CRT TV displays. Also, I use a lot of backgrounds to frame the clips, so I might scale the frame down to 80 -85% in many projects.
I have tried, but not discovered just how to batch frame all the clips, at one time, down to the smaller frame size. Is this possible?? I've tried "grouping" and "select all" in hopes of being able to just scale the whole project at one time. It doesn't seem to work.
Is this possible? If so, please tell me the secret.:)

Tom,
You do come up with those interesting questions.
I have just road tested the following, and it seems to show promise for what I think that you describe. But, I will let you follow through on the concept and see what you think.
Get your video clips on the Timeline.
Go to Edit/Preference/General and uncheck "Default Scale to Frame Size"
Go back to the Timeline, highlight video clip #1, scale it down to your 85% figure.
Then right click the scaled down video clip #1, and select Copy from the pop up. Deselect video clip #1.
Then highlight and select all the other clips that you want to have the same scaling to 85%.
Right click one of these highlighted clips, select "Paste Attributes" from the pop up.
At this point, you can go back to Edit Menu/Preferences/General and uncheck "Default Scale to Frame Size".
I took a quick look at this in the DVD preview, and it looked OK.
I started this "Default Scale to Frame Size" unchecked, but you may want to try this without doing that.
Of course, let us know what happens, bad or good.

Tom,
Just a word of caution.
When you Copy/Paste Attributes, timing is important.
For example, if you Scale/Copy/Paste Attributes at the start before you add effects, etc., you should be OK.
But, if, for example, you apply sharpening to video clip #1, scale it, Copy it, and then do Paste Attributes into the other video clips, the other video clips will have the scaling PLUS sharpening of video clip #1.

Sorry ATR, my wife calles me "Mister dramatic!!"
Just amazing.......... It works!! I would love to know how you are able to come up with your storehouse of information ? Well, you don't have to tell me.....I guess that's a rhetorical question.
You must be a genius!! I've tried searching for this kind of information, but I never seem to find what I'm looking for........ I know I ask weird stuff that most forum members don't ask about...... ....this is great.
Thanks again. Just amazing. I'd probably go crazy without your help... Sorry....... there I go again....:o

Tom,
Would you believe that I am probably more pleased with your success than you are?
It is such a joy when I find the response "Success".
Continued success.

ATR,
Well, your solution worked again. This is a bit complicated but I'll try to keep it to 20 words or less, but no promises.
My Canon GL2 does not shoot true 16:9 anamorphic video, so I bought an anamorphic lens that takes the full resolution 4:3 picture and compresses it horizontially so it can be played back in true 16:9 with no loss of resolution.
However, being the perfectionist that I am, I would notice that the geometry was just a little off in the video frame when I would set the "interpret footage" to NTSC 16:9 widescreen. It seems that everyone in the video would look a little short and wide. So I discovered that I could go into the "Motion" settings, uncheck "constrain proportions" and then just change the width from 100 to 97. Just like magic, that was just enough to get all the geometry correct to my satisfaction.
So with ATR's magic solution, I can now go through and change all my clips at one time once I get them on my timeline.
I use to have to go to each clip and change it individually, but not anymore
Thanks again, ATR.... :)
