Claire,

First, there is no Premiere Elements 6. Do you mean Premiere Elements 4 or 7?

You say that you have a JVC mini DV camcorder. What specific model do you have?

I would think that if you did a Firewire (iLink) connection between the camcorder and the computer, there would be optimal conditions for capturing your recording to Premiere Elements for editing.

Please fill in more details on your camcorder as well as transfer and we shall see if we can figure out together who is happening in your situation.

What is your computer's operating system, including Service Pack number 1, 2, or 3?

Do you have the right Firewire cable to connect from the camcorder to the computer (check the pin configuration at each end with those of the computer Firewire port and the camcorder iLink. Also, as for the computer, are you attempting to use a Video Capture Card or a Firewire port that was built into the computer when you got it?

I have been doing some reading on those JVC mini dv camcorders and capturing problems is an often told story. I will post those links later.

By the way, have you ever been able to capture from this camcorder to Premiere Elements 4 (or anything else) or is this a new problem in something that worked before?

Have you added any new programs, such as Nero?

Don't know if this will help BUT I have a Samsung SCD-103 and Premiere Elements 1.

I can not digitize/capture if I'm using the camera's battery.

The only way I can digitize/capture (using firewire) is to ensure the camera is powered by the A/C adapter.

I did some reasearch on this and in my case the A/C adapter is MANDATORY to capture.

You seem to be having the same problem that I had. After checking with the tech at Premiere Elements 4 they told me I had to convert my movies to AVI files. I called the tech at JVC and they were very helpful in instructing me on how to change the files. You will need the software that came with your camera (mine is Cyberlink) By installing this software and following their instructions I am now able to get my movies into Premiere Elements 4 to edit & burn to a DVD. My camera is a GZ-MG330 (Mini Hard Drive Camcorder) If I can be of any more help let me know. :) bjr15kwc@comcast.net

Bettijo,

Thanks for taking the time to get involved. Much appreciated.

However, based on the model you gave for your camcorder, you have a 30 GB hard drive camcorder whereas Claire has a mini DV camcorder which makes the world of difference in Capturing into Premiere Elements 4.

There are many kinds of AVI. DV AVI is the native format of Premiere Elements. AVI is considered a "wrapper" and DV the compression. You can have AVI with containing difference compression, such as AVI MPEG4, etc. When Claire connects her mini DV camcorder to her computer via a Firewire connection, she should be able to Capture DV AVI to the Premiere Elements Timeline. Whereas, from your description, your recording is being saved as MPEG2 to the hard drive of your camcorder. In your case, often it is recommended that you convert the MPEG2 to DV AVI before bringing it into Premiere Elements 4. BUT, remember that the MPEG2 from your hard drive camcorder is characterized by having Field: Upper Field First and Premiere Elements uses Field: Lower Field First. So, it is recommended that you use the Hard Drive project preset in Premiere Elements 4 when you are importing your DV AVI version of your MPEG2. Doing that results in Premiere Elements 4 automatically taking care of the Field issue. Have you run into that consideration previously?

You said you had to convert your camcorder files to AVI before bringing them into Premiere Elements. I am assuming that you meant DV AVI. What program did you use for the conversion, MPEG Streamclip? Did the Cyberlink software that you mentioned just facilitate the transfer of MPEG2 to computer or did it also have some conversion feature for MPEG2 to DV AVI?

The tech I spoke with did not mention Upper or Lower Field. Nor was anything said about DV AVI. Just plain AVI. As I mentioned I use Cyberlink PowerDirector 5.0 (this came with my camcorder), this program converts the files to AVI. Once it produces the AVI files it puts PDS files and AVI files in a folder (my works) on (my computer). From this I move them to Premiere Elements.
I'm not real computer savy, but I guess they pointed me in the right direction because it works. So far...no problems.

I am glad that all is working out OK for you. It is good not to mess with a working system. But, do keep in mind my comments, and, when and if you have the time or need, check them out with other sources.

Continued success.
