Selecting the right layer

When working on my scrapbook,I'm selecting a background and then elements and then a picture to make a collage. When I go to select one of the items, the last item I worked on is selected and I can't go on to the next item without going to the layers pallet and selecting the item I want to work on. Before this, I've always clicked outside of the stage to deselect the last item but that doesn't work now.
I've looked at the preferences to see if I accidently checked something, Any suggestions? I know there is a way to fix it, but don't remember how. I'm using PSE 5 with XP.

Sounds like you unchecked the auto select box (it's in the move tool option bar). It's a matter of preference whether you use it or not. I prefer usually to go to the layers palette and select the layer but I agree for some applications using auto select is easier.

Thanks Tony, that's exactly what I did. Sometimes my mouse goes faster than my brain.
