Hi Aud, you can make a pattern from any image or portion of an image.

Open an image you want to use for your pattern

Select the whole canvas with Select>All, or Ctrl-A , or use the Rectangular Marquee to make a selection of the area you want for your pattern.

From the menu, click Edit>Define Pattern from Selection, then OK.

To use your new pattern, create a blank document. From the menu select Edit>Fill Layer. (If you’ve defined a selection first, the menu will indicate Edit>Fill Selection.) From the Fill Layer dialog, under Contents/Use, click the dropdown arrow and select Pattern. Click the Custom Pattern dropdown arrow. Your new pattern should appear as the last thumbnail in the available patterns. Select your pattern and click OK to fill the canvas or selection with the pattern.

You can save your custom patterns with Edit>Preset Manager. Select Patterns from the Preset Type dropdown, Ctrl-Click on the patterns you wish to save in a set, then click the Save Set button and enter a Filename.

Hope this helps.

With patterns you've photographed rather than made ie:wood grains I save them as psd's in a file on my EHD and load them as needed.
