I had been using the burn tool and then went into undo history and deleted the history, now I do not see the sponge tool on the left hand side of the screen. Is it possible that I deleted it accidently and if so, can it be restored?

Joaniev,
The Sponge tool is grouped on the same tool button with the Burn and Dodge tools. Click and hold on the Burn tool and a fly-out menu should appear allowing you to pick any of those three tools.

Joanie,
This is what you should see (I'm using PSE6):

Joanie,
Have you tried resetting the tool? Click on the little arrow above the move tool.

Joanie,
Maybe try deleting preferences?
To do that close down Elements then click on the Editor start up icon and quickly hold down the Command, Option and Shift keys. Continue to hold down all three keys until you get a screen asking if you want to delete Settings ... just say Yes. You do have to be quick holding down the keys so if you have problems with it try holding down the keys with one hand before you click on the icon.
Sometimes I find simply closing down the computer and rebooting and reopening Elements solves the problem. (Last week I seemed to have lost all my layer styles and effects, but they miraculously reappeared after a reboot)
