Gradient and resizing

Hi Guys! Me again lol,

Well I have been trying to make a new signature for a car forum I am on and photoshop seems to be acting a little weird. Well when I was doing some choppin last night, I would select an image (My truck) and it would tell me I had nothing selected when I would try to copy it. Now when I set the gradient, when I paste in my truck, it's black and white ............. HELP lol

I think I understand what is happening here.
First if you want to create a new signature, be sure to do that on a new layer...not the truck layer.

create the signature,
Then if you do not want the gradient to affect the whole layer, check off lock transparent pixels near the new layer icon in the layers palette. (I forget that one all the time).
