Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum. I've been using PSE to do digital scrapbooking for about a month, and have learned a lot on my own so far.

But, something just happened that has me stumped. I was watching a tutorial, and trying to figure out how to use the control key to select the item in a layer. I also hit the H key. Now I can't get it to unselect the hand tool! I've closed the program and reopened it, and I only get the hand. When I click on another tool, it doesn't do anything!

This is very strange - can anyone help!
TIA,
Cindy

I just tried the 3-button restart and it did not help. I'm on a PC running Vista, PSE 6.

When I click on a different tool, it changes the options at the top the screen, as it should but the cursor does not change and none of the functions will work. :(

Hi Cindy,

Have you tried to Reset All Tools? In the far left of the options bar for all tools there is a dropdown with 2 choices: Reset Tool & Reset All Tools. You might try that.

Or try getting another tool with the tool's keyboard shortcut, such as B for the Brush tool.

Or try resetting preferences. Restart Elements and as soon as you see it start loading, press the Shift+Ctrl+Alt keys and hold them all down while the program loads. If it asks if you want to delete the preferences file, or something to that effect, answer yes & it will rebuild the default preferences.

Hope one of these work and you get back to normal.

I just saw you were typing the same time I was. Gee, what a dilemma. That is strange. Not sure what to tell you. Contact Adobe, I guess. Their website has a knowledge base of articles you might try searching those for a similar problem.

Have you checked the preferences for cursor settings? The should look like this-

Something similar happened to me once and it turns out the cursor settings were off-:)

Hi, I'm new to this forum and using PSE6. I just wanted to say thank you for this thread because I was having the same problem as the OP and wanted to throw my computer out the window! But thanks to CarolLHB specifically I was able to correct this issue by resetting the cursor settings in preferences. I hope this can help more people.

Hi, you said you hit the H key. Could you have a HIDDEN active selection?
That would stall every thing until you hit H again and deselect!
May be a farout wild guess.
