Eraser slow to erase

Using the eraser tool, various size brushes, 100% opacity but it's taking 3 or 4 clicks to erase. The first click hardly erases anything. This happened just after the programme (PE6) crashed and I restarted it. Can someone tell me what to do about this? Thanks.

Try resetting the tool and also double check it didn't accidently switch over to the background eraser tool(nested under the itty bitty arrow in lower right of tool icon).

I should have mentioned that I had also tried the background eraser tool and it worked perfectly.
