I think it's an Alaskan Pumpkin Mosquito. It sucks the juice from pumpkins because it doesn't like blood.
Just kidding, but it does look something like a mosquito. I sure hope not, though, the little one are bad enough.

Thanks all. He was there when I took the dog out at about 1:30 this am but now he's gone. He was creepy and HUGE.
I loved the Alaskan Pumpkin mosquito & the P40, they were hysterical!
Lorri, I did a search for crane fly and I think you're right. I had never heard of (or saw) one before, and I hope to never see one again!

We have crane flies in the Pacific Northwest. They can do damage to lawns when they are in the larval stage, but when they are adults and flying around, they are more startling than anything else. They don't bite or sting people, and actually fly rather slowly. But they are HUGE, so pretty scary-looking to the uninitiated! I don't remember seeing them as a child...only the last 20 year or so.

We have a lot of them in Texas, although I never knew what they were called. I always told my daughter and her friends that they were horse mosquitos. Big enough to carry a horse off! (Though I knew they are harmless--at least to people and horses--didn't know about the lawns!)

It looks like a crane fly. In the UK we call them Daddy Longlegs.
My dw is terrified of them!

That's interesting. Here we call a spider daddy longlegs. Oddly I was never afraid of them until I read this article (http://www.spiderzrule.com/daddy.htm). In fact we used to allow them to crawl on our arm as kids because they were "harmless". Uh - NOT !

Well, I can understand why your dw is afraid of them, whether across the pond or here in the US, they're BOTH horrible!
