View Full Version : Monopod & IS

I am going to purchase a monopod and have a question regarding Image Stabilization (IS).
In a previous thread from a few weeks ago, the topic of using IS with a tripod was discussed and what I got from it was, basically you want to disable IS when your camera is mounted on a Tripod.
Does the same theory apply to a monopod mounted camera?
I have an XSI with canon lenses, therefore the IS is in the Lens, and not the camera.
Thanks for any and all help on this.
Also, while I'm on the topic, anything in particular I should be looking for in a monopod?
I am considering the Bogen Manfrotto 681B monopod http://www.opticsplanet.net/bogen-profeccional-monopod-681b.html and the 234 tilt top swivel head http://www.opticsplanet.net/manfrotto-bogen-monopod-tilt-top-swivel-tilt-head-90.html
Thanks again.

Keep IS on when using a monopod.

Hi Bruce;
I use the Manfrotto 680B with a Manfrotto 3229 quick disconnect top. The monopod has been great to use in the field... BTW mine came from B&H.
Good luck, Tom :)

I shoot a lot of volleyball and basketball and use a Manfrotto 3245 with a 3229 head,, since I am sitting and shooting I love the quick release hand grip for instant height adjustment,,
I use an Oly E3 and never turn off the IS while on the monopod,,

Thanks for all the tips/advice everyone.
Monopod arrived today :) Wound up getting the 234RC head. All set to do some hiking/photography on the weekend. Alas, the weather gods are refusing to cooperate. Calling for lots of rain all weekend here in Ottawa.

I leave my IS on (Canon 40D). I have a Manfrotto 685B NeoTec mono and a 234RC Swivel Tilt Head/Qck Rel (3229) and I just absolutely love it. The mono is easy to use...just step on the foot at the bottom and up she goes...to whereever I want to stop it.

Norma,
I just went to the Manfrotto website to look up your monopod. They do not list your 685B anymore, but they do have 334B which is also automatic, but a hand held automatic one. That would be nice.
EDIT: I just now noticed the 685B is listed on page 2. I did not initially notice there were 2 pages of items.
The problem is, a couple months ago I went to the local camera store and bought a mono already. They were selling a mono from Promaster which is OK, but not as neat as an automatic one.
I just now ordered the quick release from Amazon as I do not have that item! :)

Thanks for pointing the 685B out. I didn't even see that when doing my research. Needless to say the 681B has been returned and a purchase of the 685B has been transacted. :)

Bruce.
I see you returned the monopod for the one Norma has. I also read in your first post that you ordered the 234 tilt top swivel head. Would you also want to reconsider that to the 234RC quick release head (http://www.amazon.com/Manfrotto-234RC-Monopod-Quick-Release/dp/B001A1POLS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1224960989&sr=1-1)?

Actually I wound up purchasing the 234RC initially. See post #6 in this thread. :)

Well, I see you are all set!! Let me know how you like them! I had thought about a tripod at first but I didn't want to carry it to some of the places I frequent so decided with the monopod! I've been happy since!
