When I click on the icon nothing happens. the little houglass symbol comes up for a couple seconds but the program does not open. what could cause this?

That happened to me when I first installed PSE6. I contacted Adobe Online Support and they emailed me steps to go through to correct the issue. I can't remember the steps and I didn't keep the email. Here's the link to Adobe:

Sounds like you might need to apply the Adobe licensing patch:

http://www.adobe.com/go/kb403002

Be sure to follow the installation instructions precisely -- it's not a "just run the .exe" install.
