View Full Version : What's Happened to CTR + Right Click?

I've just upgraded from version 2 to version 7 and it's like having a completely new programme!! One thing I can't fathom out is that I used to be able to Control+Right Click on a layer to select everything in that layer but this doesn't work in version 7. :( Please does anyone know what I have to do instead? I've also still got a problem with none of my images showing up as thumbnails - they all have the PSE logo instead - which is a real nuisance. All my other image files - jpegs, bmps, pngs - show up as images in their various folders and the Elements ones used to as well but not any more! Beginning to wish I'd never changed

Mags65, I can't answer the first question since I never worked with 2 and am not sure exactly what you mean when you say "to select everything in that layer". Perhaps someone else that lived in the world of PSE2 will understand.

As for your second problem, are you referring to "PSD" thumbnails in Windows File Explorer perhaps? There is an reason (and a fix) for that. If that is the case, are you working with XP or in Vista, etc. Please provide a bit more information about your operating environment.

Mags,

Don't know if this helps as I started with version 3, but Ctrl+A selects all, and you can Ctrl+(left) Click on a thumbnail in the layers palette to select everything in a particular layer. Hopefully one of those shortcuts will be of use.

Thank you so much Bayla - Control+Left Click works - it definitely used to be right click - or maybe I'm just losing it - wouldn't surprise me

Jeff, yes, I think that is what I'm referring to. Adobe tell me that Windows doesn't have the capability to generate thumbnails of PSD files but that's very odd because it always did when I used version 2. When I go to a folder I have it on thumbnail in the view settings and the files always used to display as images but now they all have the pse logo. I'm working with XP Home. If you know of a fix I'd be very grateful to try it.

The missing psd thumbnails is because early versions of Elements (and Photoshop) had a little psd thumbnail viewer called psicon.dll . It got removed supposedly because of file corruption problems. There are ways to fix it although I haven't tried it for a while - I did have psd thumbnails working but they've gone again and I guess I've just got used to living without them and haven't figured out why the fix I used before stopped working.

Mags65, Tony is correct, early versions of elements and the Full Photoshop came with a DLL file that was installed to allow Windows Explorer to generate thumbniails from PSD files, and for some reason in later versions Adobe stopped including the file. If you uninstalled PSE2, you may have unistalled that DLL file as well. If you Google something like "display PSD thumbnails in Explorer" you will get some hits that include instructions on where you can get that little DLL file and where to install it.

Thanks both of you. I hadn't uninstalled PSE2 and the psicon.dll file was still there but I've since downloaded another one, together with a registry fix and it is now working perfectly fine. :D

I do have another problem though and so far Adobe haven't been much help with this one either

I can access the layer styles that come with the programme in Effects, where they should be, but all the additional ones I have are not showing up there even though they are in the appropriate folder. If I click on the Text tool or the Custom Shapes tool the additional styles become available in the toolbar above the image but definitely not in Effects. Any ideas?
