Is there a way to keep the view setttings to thumbnails when opening pics for edit? I select the view to see thumbnails, edit the photo, save and close and then open the next photo. The view has now reverted to another choice.

That's a quirk of Microsoft - if you have the images in My Pictures or subfolders thereof on your main drive then it will do what you want. If they aren't in My Pictures (which is a special Windows folder) then they won't stick.

I assume we're talking about a Windows PC here anyway so there's something you could try. I don't have a PC to check this on at the moment so I'm going from memory and can't even be sure it will answer your question.

Open up Windows Explorer and locate the Folder where your images are. Right click on the Folder and select Properties.
Find the Tab that says Customise.
Click on the first Drop Down box which is about Templates and then Select Pictures and Videos.
You can also check the box that says something about 'apply this to all sub-folders'
Click OK and close Windows Explorer and then try opening your Folder in Elements.

A long shot but it might work.

Colin: I seem to recall trying that and not getting it to stick. My understanding is that File>Open uses a Windows supplied .dll and the program (like Elements) that uses it can't change the defaults. And the one for My Pictures is different from the one for other folders. I seem to recall it may be different for XP Pro - I have XP Home and the view always reverts back to list view for folders other than My Pictures and "My Pictures" folders on external drives. Could be that it's different again with Vista although that wouldn't be enough incentive for me to go that route :). Someone who knows better than I how these things work may have a solution - maybe it's possible to find the dll and edit it.

I have struggled a lot with Vista folders but not on pics. My issue it seems to want to treat all folders as music or pics. I either get thumbnails or my favorite "Artist" and "Genre".

So if I want to sort by date I have to add it to the view and then it doesn't stick.

Oh well,

I just tried a quick test on Vista and it seems to stick at what you last set it to. Not sure if it will stay the same after a reboot though.
