Shot this rose but thought the street shot detracted from it, so I replaced it with one of those happy errors. while walking past Sally's fairy lights clicked the shutter and thought it looked cute. I am not artistic but would like to know if the effect is as pleasing to others as I find it, Have named the shot the Rose of the Wars! (Pretty original EH??)

I viewed both images and think the original is better. It detracts less than the new background. It also gives you a idea of the rose's size.

I think I would just maybe add a little blur to the original background and skip the new one. Just to much going on in the new background.

I too prefer the first one - As Tina mentioned above I would blur the background more. Pretty Rose :)

I have to agree with Tina also. What a beautiful rose!

Thanks all, thought that would be the case, just proves I am aware of my artistic judgement, but I will put it down to the excitment I felt at seeing Armoured Night Firing Exercises, and thought the backing depicted that some how, and liked the juxtapositioning of such a lovely rose amid the chaos I saw in the background, ah well back to the drawingboard.
I thank you again for having a look and for making a comment, it helps me grow.

After no positive reactions to my replacement background I went out today and snapped another Rose, Is this better folks?

I like this one much better. I would consider taking the pink rose out of the photo, so that when you look at it you focus only on the red rose. Nice shot of the red rose.

Danudin:
The new rose has more pleasing color and detail.
I would leave the pink rose in the background as it gives depth to the photo.

That is a beautiful rose photo, I agree to leave the pink rose in. I also agree with everyone on the first photo's posted, the first one is much more centered on the rose then the replaced background.

It seems unanimous because unlike the others, although the plain rose shots are "Nice" to my eye the background I added seems to give the photo "Punch" - "In My Eye". So I won't spend hours making up composites anymore I will spend the time trying to frame my shots nicely in the camera!

I like the new Rose photo :)-but I'm with Tina--I would remove the pink Rose- I think it is a little distracting.

Danudin, you can continue making composites, just don't make them to distract from the main subject.

Of cause I can, but don't see that posting would benefit as it seems my tastes don't equate with others. Please don't give up on this theme Frank and others because it addresses the heart of the question I posed, "I Didn't like the background"
I chose to change it, it was done to my liking.
Now the difference expressed between Frank and and Jancy, atticrose, smiles & Tina_B with regard to the pink rose, illustrates this well. This is how I want my threads addressed, passionately.
I have a friend who likes nothing by Rodin yet I find ALL Rodin's sculpture to be beautiful, but alas I also find wart hogs to be beautiful, so I don't demand others believe as I do, just see my view.
If you point out that the pink rose defines depth or that the original background defines size to the rose, it has merit, but the term distraction means nothing without references that I can identify with.
You should have seen my photo with the background set at 100% opacity (I Loved it -as it overpowered the Rose which War would for instance) but for others tastes I dropped opacity to 23%. I feel it is more acceptable.
Please everyone and anyone else stay with this for a while, I know it is getting a bit esoteric but I am inflicted with an inability to paint and this is my first dabbling in something akin to painting, I of course WILL continue to do composites but at the risk of being trite will refrain from displaying them for now; or at least until I understand what I am trying to say by them.
Love the interplay _ Lets keep playing

Your tastes not equating with others is not important since your asking for our opinion. It's up to you whether they are valid or not.

I guess you can define distraction as whether your eye is pulled away from the main subject, or does the background complement the subject and not overpower it. When you view the rose is it comforting.
Did you notice and understand the differences between the 1st and 2nd rose that where pointed out by the replies?

Yes I can see that ones attention being drawn away would be a big distraction, so if the flower was all there was to it I would be better off selecting the flower and deleting the background but that would create an unnatural photo, I find the street scene to be the closest to being a distraction as one may want to know what else is going on in the background, the second rose appears better with the pink rose there as it indicates that it is part of a garden. I must admit that I never paid any attention to flowers prior to getting into photography.
Thanks for the elegance of your answers too, I guess your Mother told you to be gentle with the deranged, but I am not being antagonistic without reason just trying to come to grips with something new so will continue to need your input down the road. Had a go at Wendy's tut on making an orb yesterday and boy are the results, pleasing. I won't be posting these yet until I learn to polish them a bit though as I feel it can be so much better.
Thank You
Ron
