What happened to the color?

When I open my photos into the editor they open in color and they are color in the bin, but when I drag them from the bin onto the blank document they are suddenly black and white. How do I get the color back on my documents. I am sure there is a simple way, but I have yet to discover it (although I have discovered a few other things in trying).

It sounds as though your document is set to grayscale. Click on Image, Mode and make sure that RGB Color is checked.

Your defaults when you open a new document are probably wrong now...so the next time you create a new document, look carefully.
