Hi everyone,

I know I have not been around for a long, long time :o. I am thinking of going up to a DSLR and like the sound of the Canon EOS 1000D (http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosd/eosdigital5/index.html). Has anyone know anything about this camera?

An Australian review says "A well-balance camera, the EOS 1000D feels good in the hand and is so easy to use you have to fight off younger family members for shooting rights.
"As for quality, if you've never used a camera with a larger image sensor you'll be surprised at the excellent colour, critical sharpness and low noise displayed in the images it captures.
"In short, Canon's 1000D has got to be one of the best and most cost effective ways to experience the thrills of shooting with a DSLR.
"The price accompanying this review $AU1,199, is the RRP for the body and two kit lenses"

Any comments are welcome - good and/or not so good.

Cameras are allot like cars in that each manufacturer has models ranging from the stripped down basic model up to the most luxurious. I have not seen the camera you are talking about but the thing you should be most interested in is does this camera have all of the features that you want and need now and also in the not too distant future. I'm sure someone will pipe up and tell you to make sure it feels good in your hands but if you look around in a camera store you will see that most prosumer and ameteur DSLR camera bodies are about the same size and have controls in the same places with the exception of the Rebel series which is a little smaller. Canon makes very good cameras as do Nikon and others. Canon also offers about 50 lenses to choose from should you decide to go that route plus many accessories as well as aftermarket accessories and lenses. If the camera has the features that you want then go for it.

Karen,

It is good to 'see' you again! I trust you are doing OK.

I got the Canon XSi (450D) last June. The 1000D you are looking at (XS) is very similar to my XSi. The XSi has 12.2MP, the XS has 10.1MP. The XSi has a 3 inch LCD screen, then XS has a 2.5 inch LCD screen. The XSi has 9 points metering, the XS has 7 points.

Other than that, I do not see not much difference. I love my XSi, I am sure you will love the 1000D :)

Thanks Charles,

Yes, I am doing okay. My husband is insisting I research thoroughly before we even look at the camera. We are going into Bunbury tomorrow and I am hoping to see the camera in there somewhere.

Karen,

I had been looking at dSLR cameras for some time before I purchased the XSi. When holding the Canon XT or XTi, they just did not feel good in my hands. I did like the feel of the Canon 40D, but the weight of the 40D was more than I wanted to carry around. When Canon introduced the XSi, I knew that was the one for me! I am glad you and DH are going shopping for cameras tomorrow. Being able to hold one in your hands should help you decide quicker. :)

Hey Karen

Glad to see you around.

I would do a search for the differences between the XS and the XSi.

I hope those are the comparable models. I seem to recall reading that the XSi was the best bang for the buck when looking at those two even though it cost more. I can't recall the reasoning as I had a camera and was just checking reviews for fun.

There are quite a few good entry level models to choose from so don't get too set on Canon without playing with one or two.

As much as you may not want to hear this, it could take more than one trip to the store before decide.:D

I know I drove everyone crazy while I was trying to decide on my dslr. I went to a couple of different camera stores and practiced holding them, and playing with them.
The stores were helpful.
I felt somewhat guilty when I made the decision and the purchase was through B&H.
Best of luck, I know you will make the right decision.
